The Department of Neurosurgery at LSU Health Shreveport
Private practice neurosurgeons assisted in consults and teaching when the LSU Medical School in Shreveport was established in 1969. Dr. Donald Smith became the first neurosurgeon to become directly employed by the school, establishing the first neurosurgical service at LSUHSC (then still referred to as LSU Medical School) in 1977.
Several neurosurgeons worked for the division throughout the 1980s; however, by 1989, no neurosurgeons were employed by the medical school. Dr. Anil Nanda was recruited by Dr. Smith in 1990 to head the Division of Neurosurgery after completing a residency in Pennsylvania and a fellowship with the renowned Dr. Peter Jannetta. Dr. John McDonald, then Chancellor of LSUHSC-Shreveport, and Nanda agreed it was time to initiate a Neurosurgery Program which has proven to be a leading clinical strength.
University Neurosurgery now has the largest neurosurgery residency program in Louisiana. In 2000, the program became the first in northern Louisiana to obtain Gamma Knife facilities. University Neurosurgery currently has 5 clinics in Shreveport-Bossier.
