The University of Chicago Medical Center has been a world leader in organ transplant since the field's beginning. In fact, organ transplant in humans was made possible by the pioneering work of one of our physicians who earned a Nobel Prize for successfully performing the first animal organ transplant.
Today, the Medical Center has the broadest transplant program in Illinois, providing life-saving care to patients who require a transplant of the heart, kidney, liver, lung or pancreas. In addition, we are one of the few hospitals in the nation participating in a clinical trial of islet transplant and our program is internationally known for multi-organ transplants.
