UIC Congressional Debate will now count for 3 Political Science Credit Hours.
The UIC Congressional Debate Team aims to promote Congressional debate style speaking competitions at the collegiate level. Moderated by a presiding officer and governed by a parliamentary procedure, congressional debates will take the form of student congresses where competitors debate the arguments for and against given legislation with questioning periods in between. Debate topics cover economics, international affairs, and public welfare.
While there are currently a number of other forms of debate available to college students including Lincoln Douglas, policy, and parliamentary debates, congressional debate has been overlooked in America's universities. UICCD as an organization respects the advantages and heritage of the traditional debate format; however, UICCD does offer a form of debate that is considered more audience friendly, research-light, fast-paced, largely team-oriented and more extemporaneous than many of the other forms. UICCD will serve to fill the perceived gap in the forensic spectrum and retain the ever growing number of high school congressional debate graduates in this rewarding program.
Fine young speakers.
