The Department of Computer Science at the University of Kentucky was founded in 1966 and is among the oldest Computer Science departments in the country.
Whether you choose a career in computing or go on to med school, business school or
another field, your UK Computer Science education will give you a solid grounding in logic, strategic thinking and teamwork -- and enable you to do cool things with software! Through your elective choices you can choose to specialize in databases/data mining, networking and systems, artificial intelligence, security, or software engineering.
And your options don’t stop there. Because Computer Science shares a common set of core subjects with Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, and math, a substantial number of our students leave the University with more than one degree!
Worried about what you'll do after graduation? There's good news here, too. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of computer software engineers and computer programmers is projected to increase much faster than the average for all occupations -- around 21% between 2008 and 2018. Related occupations, such as Information Technology Managers, have similar prospects for growth. And according to the National Association of Colleges and Employers, starting salaries for Computer Science majors averaged over $61,000 last year.
