We're an affordable liberal arts college and a community of individuals committed to the environment, located on the unspoiled Maine coast. We call it Environmental Liberal Arts.
The University of Maine at Machias
(UMM) is turning 105 years old this
fall and has a rich history of preparing
students for the future. One of the
benefits of attending a small university
is the ability to make your own way.
It is easy to be a leader, to belong to a
student organization, to be an active
player in athletics, and to succeed here.
From your first day of class, you will
find a natural approach to learning, and
an opportunity to be engaged in the
environment like no other.
Another thing that sets UMM apart
from many other universities is
the close relationship between
the university and surrounding
communities. You’ll find first-year
students interning at local businesses
and performing hands-on research
in the regional shellfish, aquaculture,
and fishing industries, and at the
nationally recognized UMM Marine
Science Field Station. Students in the
Education program are in the local
schools the first semester observing,
learning, and teaching. Environmental
Recreation and Tourism Management
students enjoy an immediate
opportunity to explore our 243 acre
campus classroom—woods, blueberry
fields, hiking trails, and former railroad
beds. In addition, students learn
from more than 20 state and national
conservation and forestry organizations.
Upon graduation, UMM students are
prepared with academic and practical
knowledge to enter their fields from day 1.
And it works both ways—the Machias
community is very much a part of
the university community, attending
Clipper basketball, soccer, and volleyball
games; using the pool, training facilities
and gym at the Reynolds Center; or
attending theater and music programs
at the Performing Arts Center. Cultures,
generations, and world views come
together at UMM in a way that is
distinctive from other universities.
Students learn and live in an
environment unfettered by restraints
of a densely populated community
there is abundant opportunity to
explore and engage.
Through our Environmental Liberal Arts core, distinctive baccalaureate programs, and student-centered community, the University of Maine at Machias creates enriching educational opportunities that prepare graduates for professional success and lifelong engagement with the world. UMM embodies an active community of diverse learners who share a commitment to exploration, leadership, collaboration, and interdisciplinary problem solving. Inspired by our unique coastal location, UMM's creative energy, applied research, and community engagement enhance the social, cultural, economic, and natural environments of the State of Maine.
