What is Model WHO?
Model WHO conferences are educational simulation events in which students simulate a World Health Organization General Assembly and focus on addressing healthcare and global health concerns within their regional blocs. Students select from several different roles including WHO ambassadors, a member of the media, a non-governmental organization representative, a pharmaceutical representative, or an assembly moderator. During the course of the conference, students participate in numerous assembly sessions to debate and discuss public health concerns associated with the conference theme and how these concerns affect their regions. Students collaborate in the creation of a resolution paper, a formal document that suggests the methods by which to address these global health concerns, these resolutions are typically then submitted to the World Health Organization in Geneva, Switzerland. These events attract students with both a political and science background as the emphasis on global health allows for students with a wide variety of disciplines to contribute.
What is the purpose of UOMWHO?
The purpose of the UOMWHO club is to encourage attendance to Model WHO simulation conferences, promote student involvement in global health initiatives and campaigns across campus, and to begin to build the foundation for a Model WHO conference to be hosted at the University of Ottawa in the near future.
The UOMWHO club executives will be responsible for organizing training sessions to address the major concepts associated with a mock WHO general assembly.
What to expect?
The UOMWHO club will inform it’s members of any upcoming Model WHO simulation events.
These conferences are typically 3-day conferences drawing students from a variety of levels of education and disciplines. In between general assembly sessions, students have the opportunity to attend workshops and inspirational speakers. At a past event, OMWHO 2014 in Toronto, David Morley, the President and CEO of Unicef Canada, and Zulfiqar A. Bhutta, the Co-Director for Global Child Health Research at SickKids, were keynote speakers. Social nights are also organized by conference coordinators allowing students to meet their fellow delegates and network. Students spend the majority of the conference researching, discussing and debating within their assembly sessions. The events are excellent opportunities for students to develop their critical thinking and public speaking skills!
