University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine

Description

The University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine is the dental school of the University of Pennsylvania, an Ivy League university located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States. It is one of twelve graduate schools at Penn and one of several dental schools in Pennsylvania. It is part of the University of Pennsylvania Health System.HistoryPenn Dental Medicine is among the oldest university-affiliated dental institutions in the nation. Its historic ties trace back to the Philadelphia College of Dental Surgery, established in 1852. In 1856, the Philadelphia College of Dental Surgery became the Pennsylvania College of Dental Surgery, and in 1878, its Dean, Dr. Charles J. Essig, was asked to join the University of Pennsylvania, founding the School of Dental Medicine as the Dental Department of the University of Pennsylvania. He would serve as the School’s first Dean from 1878-1883. The Pennsylvania College of Dental Surgery would eventually merge with the University of Pennsylvania in 1909.The School’s first facilities were housed in Medical Hall (now Claudia Cohen Hall). The following year it moved into its own building, Dental Hall, which was designed and constructed for its particular needs. In 1897, Thomas W. Evans, a Philadelphia native and innovative dentist, who became the dentist to the courts of Europe during France's Second Empire and confidant of Napoleon III, left his estate to create and maintain a dental school that would be "not inferior to any already established." Evans' generosity made possible the construction of the Evans Building (officially called the Thomas W. Evans Museum and Dental Institute) which opened in 1915, the best-equipped dental building in the nation at that time.

I had a good experience there I got a tooth extraction today this morning. One of my largest teeth it even have to be broken & cut in two to remove properly! They get one star because I was not prescribed anything for pain afterwards not even Tylenol or Motrin. My local anesthesia wore off and I have been in excruciating pain the hole is so large deep & painful, I took Motrin on my own still in pain I called and a doctor returned my call and assured me she was sending in a pain medication well 2 for me and I had someone go pick it up for me because I can’t even think straight because of the pain & to my surprise there was NO PRESCRIPTION SENT ! They are currently closed and I’m current in the worst pain I’ve ever felt, right now literally crying my eyes out!
Slowest and worst services. They have always charged me extra, and when i ask for a refund , they make stories. The appointment slot is usually 2 hrs, which is enough to get a minor process done, but they called my name 1 hr late and when the time slot was over, they said to come again. Who is responsible for that 1 hr which you wasted and for the slow service. Alow these guys are not giving me back my money. P.S. : I am a student and rxtracting money from a student like that is a sin
I lost my parents insurance 4 years ago and have had a hard time finding good insurance through different jobs which lead me to go to a lot of very shady dentist that did more damage to my teeth then help. Penn dental has one of the nicest “offices” and very skilled staff of long time dentist and highly skilled students. The students in charge of my case have been extremely kind and helpful, I also had some financial issues with my insurance that wouldn’t cover everything I need and the head dentist put it on a school grant they just recieved which saved me 2k plus and months of stress.
I normally don’t have an issue but as I tried to get checked in the woman at the desk was having a full conversation with another employee while I was standing there for about 3-5 mins she then told me one second . I sat down the got up at my appointment time which was 1pm . I just start talking over her so I can get my child checked in for his appointment after that I was checked in but was waiting 15mins to go to the back this has never happened! The lady must’ve either been new or something I’ve nvr seen her @ the front
Saw Dr. Riley Funk. Great dentist. Patient. To the point. And helpful. He is going to have a big future in Dentistry.
I had two implants put in. Both have broken off within 6 months. Now they require me to buy now ones before they can order them. Called on numerous occasions . Always say I will get a reply within 24hours but never hear a word.
We’ve had the opportunity to meet a few pleasant / professional students at the dental school first by name Daisy, you are the best - although I’ve read all the reviews on this page most are not so positive I’m sure due to one isolated bad experience, I’m pleased to say I haven’t had that experience with neither of the Students - Daisy / Eric are truly Dentist whom I will be more than happy to let work on my mouth if I needed a Dentist in the future we just want to say thank you for your kind words / professionalism also to the lady at the front desk thank you for your kind words you always look so nice sry I forgot your name Hubby said don’t forget to mention Travis whom was always available / professional as well thank you we pray you all have a successful future as Dentist Mrs L Jones / Mr Smith
Not worth the hassle. All of your appointments are split up, so assume one simple procedure to take 3+ appointments. The students at the school have to schedule patients in strict boxes, so your care is often rushed as they get close to the end of the appointment time. I needed a root canal - simple procedure - and it has been a huge headache. My core build up told it could last years fell out after 3 months. My temporary crown, which was supposed to last months, fell out after 48 hours. Got that re-cemented. Then it fell out before 24 hours. The poor patient care is not worth the hassle or the slightly lighter cost. *update - I’ve had the temp crown redone and recemented twice and it’s fallen out twice again. How is it supposed to last me over a month?*
GO HERE AT YOUR OWN RISK.....I AM LONG TIME PATIENT OF THIS DENTAL SCHOOL...WHILE THEIR DENTAL ABILITIES ARE GOOD QUALITY, THE OFFICE WILL SPACE OUT APPOINTMENTS SO A DENTAL JOB THAT MAY TAKE ONLY 1 VISIT WILL EASILY BE MADE INTO 6 SEPARATE VISITS SO THAT THE DENTAL STUDENTS CAN GET MORE WORK EXPERIENCE. THAT IS INCONVIENT TO THE PATIENTS. ALSO, BE AWARE OF THEIR SCHEME AND SCAM "ATTENDANCE POLICY", I PREVIOUSLY HAD MANY APPOINTMENTS HERE FOR MANY MONTHS, I WAS 100% AWARE OF THEIR ATTENDANCE POLICY, AND HAD ALWAYS ABIDED BY THEIR POLICY. ONE DAY I HAD TO RESCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT SO I CALLED AND SPOKE WITH TWO EMPLOYEES, TWO DIFFERENT TIMES AT THEIR OFFICES AND THEY BOTH CONFIRMED I WAS 100% FINE TO RESCHEDULE MY APPOINTMENT, HOWEVER INSTEAD I WAS LISTED AS A "NO SHOW" AND THE OFFICED REFUSED TO BOOK ANOTHER APPOINTMENT, THAT WAS 3 YEARS AGO, I WAS IN THE MIDDLE OF CROWN DENTAL WORK AND THEY REFUSED TO SCHEDULE A NEW APPOINTMENT SO I COULD COMPLETE THE DENTAL WORK I WAS LITERALLY IN THE MIDDLE OF, DUE TO THIS I SUFFERED DENTAL INFECTIONS AND EVEN ABCESES FORMED THAT HAD TO,BE TREATED AND I HAD TO BE HOSPITALIZED DUE TO THE DENTAL INFECTIONS..... NOW, 3 YEARS LATER, THIS DENTAL SCHOOL RECOGNIZES THEIR ERROR AND IS ALLOWS ME TO,MAKE APPOINTMENTS. THIS IS AFTER THEY LITERALLY RUINED MY BEAUTIFUL BRIGHT STRAIGHT WHITE SMILE AND RUINED MY DENTAL CARE FOR 3 F*****G YEARS. ABSOLUTELY PATHETIC PLACE AND I WILL NEVER TRUST THIS PLACE AGAIN WITH MY DENTAL CARE. PLEASE BE CAREFUL IF YOU GO TO THIS OFFICE, YOU MAY GET ABSOLUTELY PATHETIC CARE AT THIS LOCATION YOU MAY ALSO GET YOUR BEAUTIFUL SMILE DESTROYED BY THIS OFFICE LIKE I HAD HAPPEN TO ME
I would not recommend this school unless you have no other option. You have to remember that these are students working on your mouth. So you will most likely spend an ungodly amount of time to have simple procedures done. At my most recent visit, I waited over two hours to have one filling done. The student used contaminated instruments in my mouth and held one of the instruments upside down when being assisted by the dentist. That filling just came out, and now I'll have to pay $175 to get it refilled elsewhere. Please don't come to this school if you don't have to. Clearly, the students are not monitored well.
