Updates, news, support, and patient education related to organ transplants from University of Mississippi Medical Center Transplant Services.
University Transplant, a part of University of Mississippi Medical Center, has a long history of solid organ transplantation beginning with the first-ever lung and heart transplants, performed by Dr. James Hardy in 1963-64 at UMMC. Dr. Hardy proved that transplanted lungs would breathe and a transplanted heart would beat in their new recipients.
In 2007, the kidney and heart transplant programs joined as University Transplant, the only transplant program in the state. Currently, adult and pediatric heart and kidney transplants, as well as adult liver and pancreas transplants, are performed at UMMC.
Patients in need of a transplant no longer have to travel out of the state to receive treatment. Evaluation, surgery and follow-up are offered through University Transplant. The specialized care team of experienced transplant surgeons, hepatologists, nephrologists, and advanced heart failure cardiologists focuses on personalized family-centered care.
Easy access to care for our patients is important to us.
For patients who live more than one hour from Jackson, we provide evaluation services and immediate post-transplant care in Grenada and Gulfport.
