"It hurts when I squat"...."I've got bad knees, so I can't squat"...."I can't lift weights because it hurts my back"....."My shoulder hurts when I do pushups"........ever heard those things before? Better yet, have you ever SAID those things before? What happens when you tell your doctor? ESPECIALLY if you let it slip that you *gasp* work out at a CrossFit box *gasp*? Typically, the response is "If it hurts to squat, don't squat", right?
Well, let me tell you from personal experience, there IS HOPE for you. My response in that same situation is "If it hurts to squat, let's find out what you're doing wrong, and get you squatting better" Most people can mobilize their soft tissue, strengthen and stabilize their core, and begin to exercise without the pain they may be feeling today.
I'm not saying you won't be sore after you workout, but what I am saying is that you will be sore in the right places, and your body will be able to adapt and recover faster. Through consultation, evaluation, treatment, and eventually self-care, you can improve your performance.
Squats are just the tip of the iceberg!!! Problems with Overhead barbell work? Deadlifts? Cleans? Achieving and maintaining 'rack position'? Ring dips? The same interventions and solutions are available to everyone, for EVERY movement. It's all a matter of finding the limitations or mechanical 'faults' and correcting them. THAT is what we do.
