Aisha is the best. She always does an excellent job. She is very friendly and knowledge about natural hair care maintenance. I have and will continue to recommend her as a stylist.
The shop is cute and small, but a bit tricky to find as the sign is on the steps going down vs. On the top of the building with an arrow pointing down. Very personal feeling. The wash chairs are very nice and made well to keep from having neck pains. My Stylist Aisha was fast and efficient. She was knowledgeable with hair care but the energy of the room felt a bit limited/cold towards conversing on my first visit as I had an impression in my head there would be a lot of hair talk and what to do at home to maintain my hair, however my tip was to keep it dry from water, but oiled which has value. I am hoping this is due to the newness of me as customer or the time of the appointment and the lack of experience with my hair. I understand everyone isn't a morning person or big on conversing. Overall, the experience was great. The products smelt amazing in my hair and has kept my hair very well moisturized. I rebooked for another appointment and will update this review again as I experience more appointments.
I struggled with what to say in this review. I started going to Urban Natural back in 2017 when I was just starting my loc journey. My best friend had been going to the salon for years and swore it was a great place. I went to Stephanie and she did an amazing job! I was satisfied with how my hair looked and I started to go to her regularly roughly every 4-6 weeks. Sometimes I'd book an appointment and she would need to push the time up and back. Most times I didn't mind because she would let me know ahead of time. Sometimes I'd need to wait 20, 30 or 40 minutes after my scheduled appointment time, but I never said anything because Stephanie usually worked fast. Then Stephanie no longer worked at the salon and my appointment was cancelled without any offer to reschedule for a later date. Eventually I made another appointment and went to Aiisha and she did a really good job. But I had to sit for close to an hour before she started me. She took off $5 because of my long wait. I made another appointment and decided to go to Ramona. She changed my appointment TWICE, once from 9 to 11 and then from Wednesday to Friday. She did a good job and was the first stylist to talk to me about how to maintain healthy hair. And we made plans to add color to my hair on my next appointment. I scheduled that appointment for later in September and once again she changed the time of my appointment without consulting me. I cancelled the appointment and decided to go to an entirely new shop. The stylists at Urban Natural know what they're doing and do an excellent job. I loved how my hair looked and felt after leaving the salon. And they're reasonably priced. BUT I was fed up with my appointments consistently being changed without my permission. I'm flexible and don't mind moving things around. But this was a consist issue and I felt the salon made no efforts to fix it. As many other people have said, their customer service skills could be improved. I'm not looking for fake smiles and cheery greetings when I walk through the door. But I would like my time to be respected. I went to another salon and the service there was LEAGUES better than what I received at Urban Natural. If Urban Natural improved their customer service skills and respected my time more, then I would gladly stay with them and write a glowing review. But I know that I'll find a salon that does an excellent job with my hair and treat their customers well.
My last stylist bailed on me after she promised she’d do my hair for my birthday last year. That very same day I stumbled across Urban Natural Hair’s webpage, met Aiisha New Stylist and to date she’s been the BEST yet! I enjoy the ambiance and customer care and service she provides each and every time I get my maintenance done! Thank you for being Fabulous! You make my loc journey so with it !
I have been going to Urban Natural Hair for years. I used their services in Maryland, now Virginia. Aisha, my hair stylist in Virginia is amazing. She picked the perfect hair color for me. It compliments my skin tone. I don't think I will ever use another color. Thank you Aisha! And I also think the owner for supporting natural hair and providing a relaxing environment for both men and women:
This company has been in my life for some time now and I was truly torn about writing anything to begin with. My family changed that because they felt I should tell the truth. There are MANY excellent hair care specialists who take pride in their work and do a fabulous job on your hair. I have left very satisfied every time I get my hair done. There is 24-hour scheduling, multiple locations and various hair care specialists have a range of appointment times to accommodate your schedule. These features drew me in since I am in the medical field and this makes life so much easier. That being said, you have to take the GOOD with the BAD everywhere. The BAD news about this establishment is the customer service and lack of regard for you as a person. Although their employees do very good work, customer service appears to be where they are lacking. I have had my hair done by multiple hair stylists there 5 in total during my long history with them but they all seem to have the same issue- 'respect them & their time/efforts but they can disrespect you.' Moreover, you need to take it and like it if you want to continue business with them. This has never been said outright but actions speak louder than words. I can not count the times I have been cancelled on at the last minute less than 1 hour before my scheduled time for non emergencies, left unacknowledged because phone calls were never returned, made to wait more than 30 minutes past my scheduled time without a simple heads up or had to wait on a stylist to 'get back to me' when my hair style was already started past the shampoo, conditioning and hair dryer part of the process. Despite the issues noted above, I have TRIED to stick with this company because I want to support BLACK owned businesses; hence why I have tried different stylists to see if I can make it work. It appears a majority have the same problems- customer service. I don't believe they have policies in place to combat this since each stylist is their own entity so you just never know what you are going to get when you give them your business. Some visits are fine while others leave you with a sour taste in your mouth. If I did that in my field, I would be under some type of consequences as customer service drives revenue. They don't allow us to represent the company any kind of way. We have a standard to uphold. As a long standing customer, you would think you would be treated better... I am sadly mistaken. I have tried to remain loyal over the years to keep Black Money in this Black-owned business but, as a consumer, you seem to get variability no matter which location or stylist you see I have seen 5 different stylists & been to 3 out of their 4 locations. Consistency and customer service is NOT their strong suit. Consumer beware... Expect the worse but pray for the best. That why, you are prepared for whatever you get. ***See Facebook for complete post. Google limits characters***
After years of damaging my hair I finally made an appt to see a natural hair specialist... I’m happy that it was Ramona! I’ve been getting my hair treated and styled by Ramona since Nov. My scalp is no longer irritated, my hair is growing, it’s healthy and strong and no shedding. The very first time I met Ramona she asked me what I loved about my hair and I said nothing. If she were to ask me now, I would say I love everything about my hair thanks to you:- She’s personable and professional.
Rating is based on the hair products. I’ve been purchasing their hair products for over two years and I don’t want anything else in my hair. Thumbs up to the hair and body butters. I haven’t received hair services here yet since I do my own hair but I will let them twist my hair one day and update my review on the hair service.
Sterk is the stylist to go to for sisterlocks. She is awesome! She provides great customer service, she is always on time, and she's a pleasant person overall. She is amazing! She takes her work seriously and cares about her clients. I highly recommend her. Thank you Sterk!
Appointment date: 11/25/17. Summary: the products are great but the customer service I received was extremely poor. I got my hair colored, interlocked, and styled by Stephanie G. My appointment was triple booked, I spent a total of about six hours at the salon. My hair was so tight that I ended up with bumps all over my scalp. I will not go back to Stephanie G. On the day of my appointment I arrived right on time and was greeted by my stylist at the door. It wasn’t the warmest welcome but I figured it was just because I was a new customer and she didn’t know me like that. I went straight to the wash station where my stylist asked me all the same questions that I had answered via email which made me feel like she hadn’t even reviewed the information I provided prior to the appointment. She commented that I had a lot more new growth than she realized. I said I sent pictures and she said that it’s hard to really tell from a picture. Fair enough. Even when she was just kind of looking through my locs her handling of them was a bit rough. She asked if I was tender headed and at first I said no. I got a partial color service so she applied the color and sent me under the dryer for about an hour, while she finished with another customer. An hour just for the color to process was a bit long but I didn’t make a fuss. She washed my hair very well. Then we moved to her station and she started interlocking my hair. I winced and she asked again if I was tender headed so at this point I said yes. She said something to the effect that she wasn’t soft handed but she’d do her best. I said that it doesn’t have to be so tight and she told me that was the point of interlocking, for it to be tight. I said but it doesn’t have to be painful. I have had my locs interlocked before and it was NOT painful. About a third of the way through my hair she just stopped and walked away with no explanation. She started on another customer. She completely finished with that customer and just when I thought she was coming back to me she started a third customer! I was pissed and shocked. It wasn’t until she was almost done with the third customer that she even said “bear with me just a little bit longer.” I was so angry but I didn’t want to leave with my hair partially done. After about an hour and 40 minutes she finally resumed my hair. I just sat there angry and in pain while she finished my hair. I didn’t say anything because I knew nothing I said in that moment would have been polite or professional. At one point I had my head cocked to the side and she ended up poking me in the ear. When I said ouch she replied by saying that it would help if I sat up. Why didn’t you just say that to begin with? I don’t know what I was thinking letting her style my hair because I was already in pain. The style was super tight and only made matters worse. I didn’t really care for the style either. I was so ready to just pay and leave. She gave me a “discount” on the color service because of the wait. The discount I received was not sufficient to make up for such a horrible experience and I still tipped her. She said she didn’t realize I had so much new growth and therefore hadn’t scheduled ample time to do my hair. That’s fair, but when she walked away from me in the chair she didn’t even say anything. She knew that was the case the moment she assed my hair at the wash station. She could have handled that a variety of ways. She could have told me straight up that she would have to stop during my appointment to do two other clients or ask if I wanted to reschedule instead. Instead, she just started my hair knowing that she hadn’t scheduled enough time so I was just stuck. She handled the situation poorly and made a very bad first impression. I ended up taking the style down the same night because I could barely lay my head on the pillow from the pain caused by how tight it was. I should not have asked for a style after everything else so that was my bad. My hair looked nice but I couldn’t even enjoy my fresh locs because my scalp hurt so bad.
