We decided to check out the USS Midway as my partner is currently active in the Navy and he was interested in seeing how an aircraft carrier compared in size to his current ship. The history of the Midway is interesting to say the least! The volunteers on board are all very welcoming and informative. They give a great tour of the island must do which will give you lots of information on the history of the ship, and why it will likely be the last of it's kind to become a museum. Leave ample time to see everything. We arrived around 2:30, they closed at 5pm and we still didn't get enough time to see everything. So we had to rush down to the lower level to see the bunks as I wanted to see what my partners life is like underway. Thank you to the veterans and everyone else there. We really enjoyed our experience.
A place to go in Miami. I could touch my unmet child dreams real in front of me. An amusement park to feel a top gun. Jokes aside, great place to see how big, complicated and organised is an air carrier. The museum is getting a bit old, but the appeal is still the same. Ticket can be bought online, guides are volunteers super proud and accurate in explaining how life on board was. And finally, a broad collection of planes, helicopters and weapons can be touched and sometimes entered. A very well furnished shop with merchandise will give you the chance to bring home a nice souvenir. Tickets can be bought online. Visit takes a good couple of hours. Very interesting and definitely recommended.
After months of talking about it, we finally took the kids here last weekend. We've been to the USS Iowa in San Pedro, so we expected something similar. The USS Midway was similar in that it was a warship, but the size difference was incredible. We ended up spending over 3 hours on the ship, and we could've stayed longer if it wasn't closing time. There were so many things to see and listen to you could get a free audio tour handset. We didn't even have time to visit the island due to the long time and below the hanger area. I'd highly recommend this place if you have kids, into US history, or like enjoy military equipment because it is sensory overload, in a good way.
The USS Midway is remarkable! Take a self-guided tour with audio bring your own wired headphones and at each display you'll hear the story/history of the Midway. The docents along the way were fascinating to listen to and answered questions with this zest that brought everything to life! The below decks are a little tight, but everything is well lit and maintained so don't hesitate to see everything from bow to stern! Over half of the exhibits are in easily accessible areas so those with walkers, canes, or wheelchairs can enjoy the visit as well. Two suggestions: make sure you give yourself plenty of time to explore!! This is not a rush-through and call it done kind of museum. Also, if you're fair-skinned you will probably want to slather on some sunscreen before you visit the flight deck. On the flight deck there are lots of photo ops for everyone who can resist posing with the shooter on the deck as he launches an imaginary jet. There are simulators and exhibits on the hangar deck that the kids and kids-at-heart will LOVE and a really cool gift shop! Look, this is real American military/naval history. Bring the kids, or don't, but if you're in San Diego and you don't visit the USS Midway...you are WRONG! :
Great experience! Spent 3 hours walking around. Could easily spend more or less time based on your plans. Audio tour is included. You get to go through so many areas. The staff are so friendly and a wealth of knowledge and willing to share personal experiences. Make sure you bring your walking shoes as there are small stairs to go up and down on a well. Only caution is if you're over 6 feet tall, you'll be ducking often!
Highly recommended!! One of the best museum I've been to just because they have an audio guide. You could spend the whole day listening to everything. There are veterans on board that will answer any questions that you have and will tell you stories of when they served in the ship. It was truly a great experience. Totally worth the entrance fee. I bought my tickets online and had no wait at all to get in. There is a cafeteria and a gift shop.
A must see while you’re visiting SD! I brought my family here and although the ship is older, they were able to get an insight into my life as an Active Duty sailor. Make sure you get some great pictures in front of the Unconditional Surrender statue out front as well.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedYesPrice for adult entry$31+
My wife and I walked from our hotel and took the self-guided tour of this incredible aircraft carrier. There were people everywhere offering you help as you proceed through the tour. The ship is well maintained and the aircraft are in excellent condition. I want to go back to see what we were unable to see due to time. Really should give yourself two days to take everything in.
It was great to view a part of military history. Walking the flight deck with actual aircraft that were launched off the deck. The officers quarters. The confining spaces below deck. Sitting in the Captain's chair. It's a great experience.
I spent about 2 hours on the Midway and probably could have spent another 2 hours to cover all of the areas they allow us to enter. The collection of aircraft in the hangar and on deck is impressive. Exploring below decks really gives you a feel of both how tight it was as well as how huge this ship is. The staff and volunteers are great and did a great job answering my questions. If you're interested in our naval history I heartily recommend you visit USS Midway.
