Awesome time!! The engine room alone was well worth the visit. The staff was very helpful, they explained certain features I wasn't sure about. For those who say the ship is in bad condition, she is a on going restoration project. We are lucky to still have the USS Salem around today.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entry$21–30
This ship is great to visit! It also has a working bathroom on the ship. Lots of stairs/ladders, and the ramp up to the ship has a step, so mobility issues need to be taken into consideration. Overall it has a lot of information from the 1940s to 1970s-ish. Significantly less busy than the ships downtown Boston if you try to avoid the big crowds.
Very cool and well-preserved boat. Great bonus tour by staff and got to see the CIC, which is impeccably preserved and incredibly interesting. So worth the trip!Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entry$11–15
If you're a history lover, or simply want a unique experience - you need to get there. Bring kids if you have em. Last heavy cruiser with heavy guns and armor in existence, USS Salem is a treasure trove of history. We visited on our way home from Boston to NYC, joined a small group of eager listeners who followed a volunteer, who gave us a private tour we will never forget. Guy didn't accept tips so we gave generously to ship's donation box. Hope that our collective dollars will keep this ship afloat and open to public longer. Loved every minute of being there. Staff was superfriendly, as well as a group of young cadets, who were gathered for some excercise there. Experiences like that very hard to come by for me, normally, and can not be expressed in dollar signs. Please visit and enjoy as we did.
Overall very cool couple of hours. Worth going to if you're a fan of navy ships. Pros: This is an all access ship. Most areas are free to enter including the bridge, engine room, and turret! Very very cool place and really makes you appreciate the sailors who served on this kind of ship. Cons: the ship is currently under preservation efforts which means a lot of rust and peeled paint. Nothing to crazy but it's being actively maintained. Also add you're free to wander you might overlook some parts like the way up or that small access port that leads to another area.
Visited the USS Salem CA-139 yesterday and had a blast. It is a great ship and the volunteers were great and very helpful. Jeff and Jim took us down to the Engineroom and FWD Diesel. We had a great time and truly enjoyed our visit. We will be coming back to visit again and see the rest of the ship. I highly recommend visiting this great ship!!!!

Definitely worth a stop! It was pretty quiet while we were there, but it was fun to tour around the ship. My grandpa served on this ship after it was first commissioned, so I chatted with a few of the staff & they helped find where his bunk room would've been. They were all so great!Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo wait
Great ship to go see staff was very helpful and the memorial to the USS NEWPORT NEWS which I served on was also great. Would recommend this tour for anyone interested in Naval history. There is a lot of climbing up and down steep stairs. Would go again
Navy ships haven't changed too much. Pretty awesome to see the last preserved Heavy Cruiser. Nothing too spooky with the lights on, did the self-guided tour and wandered around like the good sailor I amVisited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entry$11–15
