Utah State Hospital

Description

The Utah State Hospital is a mental hospital located in Provo, Utah, United States of America. The current superintendent is Dallas Earnshaw.HistoryThe Utah State Hospital began as the Territorial Insane Asylum in 1885 at Provo, Utah, with the purpose of housing and treating those considered to be mentally ill and attempting to return them to normal levels of functioning. However, due to limited knowledge about treatment of mental health at the time, the hospital became little more than a place for the mentally ill to live. The site chosen in Provo was eight blocks from the nearest residence and was separated from the city by swampland and the city dump.In 1903 the Asylum was renamed the Utah State Mental Hospital, and in 1927 it adopted its current name in an effort to eliminate the negative stigma associated with the word “mental.” Long-term patients at the hospital engaged in work therapy, which gave them something to do and also made USH self-sustaining. The hospital originally sat on 600 acres of land, and housed a dairy, a hay barn, and a piggery, as well as chickens, rabbits, and pigeons. Residents took care of the animals and also harvested fruits and vegetables from the orchards and gardens on campus. As more and more patients began their indefinite incarceration at the hospital, problems of overcrowding arose. In the 1940s USH had 700 beds, but the hospital was housing over 1,100 patients. It was not uncommon to see mattresses lining the hallways, and the large surplus of patients made it difficult for staff members to focus their attention on individuals. Dr. Owen P. Heninger became the superintendent of USH in 1942. He recognized the need for change at the hospital, and as a result, he pioneered a new treatment philosophy. His new treatments included adopting smaller treatment units, involving patients in the implementation of their own treatment plans, and encouraging more humane treatment.

I went to an interview for a Senior Psych Tech position. I got a call back saying they decided to go with another candidate. But if I would like to apply for a lower position that would be great. I’m too black to be in a high position but good enough to be worked like a dog with low pay.
UTAH! Please advocate and pray for the patients at the Provo State Hospital! The patients have NOTHING to look forward to! They are scared, sad and depressed. They walk in circles most of the days, and are let outside very little! Most patients have No visitors, and are treated like mistreated cattle!! I’m 100 percent positive that the staff would not last a week in the mentally ill’s shoes! They do NOT have a voice or dare speak up! UTAH please advocate and help the mentally ill as if they were brain cancer patients. I feel they are punished for having mental illness. A little kindness would go a long ways for all these suffering souls!
I can’t comment on the hospital services but as a Disc Golf player I find it very disappointing how much wasted water is used on the grass grounds all around the hospital. It is constantly swampy all over. The sprinklers are on almost every time we go. It’s really a shame so much water is being wasted here. Aside from that it’s an amazing Disc Gold course so I thank them for keeping the fields healthy, it’s just way too much.
Healing and recovery is not an easy path. There is a lot of trial and error. Each and every case is unique and complicated. Mental Health is vital it is a basic need. When you find yourself suffering with your own or a loved ones mental health it can be difficult to find help, the right help and perhaps even more difficult is finding support. I have suffered severely with my own mental health and was once a patient at this hospital. To need this level of care comes with immense challenges for the patient as well as those who are Doing what they can to help. There is room for improvements. However, I would not be where I am today without this hospital and my skilled and kind Doctor, treatment team and the devoted techs and therapists I worked with everyday. Even my fellow patients were a great aid in my journey to wellness and healing. This hospital is needed and is filled with people who truly care and who are effective! Too often we are only willing to look at what is wrong and invalidate what is good. I am someone with a severe illness an illness which few are ever able to live a life worth living. I am high functioning because of the care I received at this hospital. The knowledge and help I gained that I could then choose to apply and act upon is what helped me find my way to reality and how to live with my illness and do more than survive. I am alive, thriving and well because I was lucky enough to receive help and care here. I give 4 stars and not 5 only because of the growth we all stand in need of and hope more of us will strive to do all we can and choose to be willing and practice becoming more than we are today.
I worked here for 4 years And I can say I’ve seen it all the pt are safe and in good hands the staff isn’t safe though that’s the problem it’s dangerous I’ve seen it all the place is haunted
The most precious period of my entire career was during the 20 years that I served there, 17 of which as Chaplain. To walk on the journey with patients and staff alike, was the most sacred and humbling experience of all. I love them, I miss them and hope that I may have touched at least a few lives for the better as they certainly did mine.
Worked there for a year. Administration and management really don’t care at all. The hospital loses all kinds of money instead of treating patients. In the civil buildings they just let people wander around with NOTHING to do instead of trying to help. Every day it was so sad to watch. Us techs didn’t know what to do except try and enforce order, which was hit-or-miss. In the forensic area, patients have a lot more activities to do, and actually get spoken to more like people. Civil wonders why their patients act up so much, what a joke. More than half of the nurses just blame everything on the techs and sleep. Yet sadly, despite it all, this place will do more for patients than the privately owned “hospitals” owned by greedy, blood-sucking fiends.
Helped my daughter want to live again. So grateful for the stuff. They listened. They worked with me as the parent. Amazing people.
I inquired about an ancestor who was a patient here over a hundred years ago, knowing that 1- documents probably no longer existed and 2- if they did it would take forever to find. I got a prompt, kind, email back telling me they would do their best to find what they could. 4 days later, I received a packet of documents on behalf of my ancestors case. Their service was kind, polite, they didn't "pass the buck", they didn't patronize me, they didn't ask for money, and the promptly sent me what I asked for. I was so impressed with this institution and their wonderful staff. I will forever be grateful to them for their help.
Unfortunately my mother is stuck in here I would not recommend sending a loved one here they have given my mother someone else's medication 3x once landing her in the ER and all they tell me is they are "working at better medication procedures"
