Valley Oak Charter is a K-12 independent study program. A free WASC accredited, home-based, public charter with enrichment classes and family involvement.
What Is VOC?
Valley Oak Charter School is a home-based independent study program. As a public charter school, Valley Oak is free of charge and welcomes students in grades K-12 regardless of race or religious affiliation.
VOC stresses family involvement and individual responsibility. Our program provides homeschooling and parenting support, funding for curriculum materials and a consistent social group in a multi-age setting.
Our program is offered Tuesday through Thursday, September through June. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, contracted staff and specialists lead Elective Classes both on and off campus, providing a wide array of activities and in-depth learning opportunities. Wednesdays are dedicated to field trips, special presentations, workshops, group play and projects, individual activities, and tutoring.
Valley Oak families choose, plan and participate in independent learning activities during the week. As part of an Independent Study Program, learning activities are documented by parents and presented to the teacher weekly along with student work samples. Teachers meet with families periodically throughout the semester to offer feedback, give support, and act as a resource.
Valley Oak supports various styles of homeschooling, honoring each family's unique way of learning. We maintain a large lending library offering a wide variety of learning materials. Books, games science materials, tools, math manipulatives, and reference materials are among many of the available items. In addition, families have access to grade-level funding to supplement their child's home academics.
Valley Oak parents meet several times a year to review, plan and address concerns of the program. Parents as a group have many organizational functions, including serving on school committees, assisting in the classroom, providing support for field trips and special activities.
WHAT WE BELIEVE:
Valley Oak Charter is dedicated to supporting and empowering homeschooled students and their families as they take an active role is designing and implementing an educational program that addresses the state standards while igniting a passion for learning and stimulating the intellectual, emotional, and physical health of the child.
Our Philosophy evolves from the understanding that learning takes place constantly and in all settings. VOC supports life-long learners who have opportunities to pursue personal interests and make choices about activities and goals.
Our Program is designed to support families who homeschool, and to add to the diversity of options in public education. VOC provides social opportunities, academic resources, enrichment activities, support materials and teachers as resource people.
Our Families maintain responsibilities for their children’s education. While we offer the support of credentialed teachers, activities, materials and classes, it is up to the individual families to decide how to best educate their children within the guidelines of the state framework, including participation in all state and federally mandated testing.
