Vanderbilt YMCA

About

For Youth Development. For Healthy Living. For Social Responsibility.

Description

We’re Here for good. It’s been the signature phrase of New York City’s YMCA since early 2008, and it describes the Y’s commitment to building the foundations of—and strengthening—our communities, through nurturing the potential of every child and teen, improving community health and well-being and providing opportunities to give back and support neighbors. We’re here for you and your family. We’re here for the community. We’re here for good.

Mission

The YMCA of Greater New York is a community service organization which promotes positive values through programs that build spirit, mind and body, welcoming all people, with a focus on youth.

Very disappointed with the services. Lack of security. Kid are allowed in the ladies changing room. Kids and infants are allowed in the ladies sauna room. Boys are also seen in the ladies locker & changing room. Saw a lady washing her child’s blood in the ladies water fountain. No towel services. They use to have towel services.
Ive worked out at close to over 50 YMCA's and this one had the most awkward locker room layout Ive ever seen; its awful and had I not inquired wouldnt have even known about the "hidden" other half which had a small sauna and another shower area. In order to reach the other half, had to traipse by 2 lazy YMCA employees who were lounging with their feet up, talking loudly, in an overly bright tv lounge, while only in a towel and wet; totally awkward/odd/uncomfortable and if they were on a break, thats not the location that should be allowed for that and its all very small and claustrophobic.
On 1/9/23 at about 10:50am, I used my key to buzz myself in to the gym. When I didn't hear a beep, I walked over to the Membership Desk and did the same thing. A Mildred said, "Why did you do that? You made me lose my placeon the computer. Now I have to start all over again!" I said that I was new and thought that I wasn't properly registered. She ignored me. I said, "sorry, I won't come back." She continued to ignore me. A woman that Mildred was speaking with explained that even if I don't hear a beep, when I use my key, I will still be considered registered for the day. Needless to say, I was crestfallen by Mildred's attitude.
The overall experience was pretty well. The room was clean and they were changing the towels every day. We went in November and the weather was very cold but in our room we had a heater which was working well. Sometimes it was even too hot in the room. There are 2 showers and restrooms in each floor and we never had any problem with it. Now the cons. The hotel staff seemed a little bit unorganized and not professional. The rooms don’t have safety boxes, so if you want to leave your documents, you can leave them at the administrative desk where they have a small safety box, but they won’t let you to take it and you will need to disturb the staff every time you want to put in and out your stuff. And the last one, they charge 2$ for a piece of luggage to look after it after your check out.
I was a little nervous to stay here because the reviews were so mixed, but honestly, it's not as bad as many of the reviews say! It's basically what I expected-- a no-frills hostel room above a YMCA. Yes, the staff was usually grumpy, and yes, the rooms are pretty basic, but if you're on a budget it really can't be beat. And hey, you can even use the pool. The room was small, but not as small as I expected, and I was pleasantly surprised to find that it even had a writing desk and mini-fridge. The room was spotless and they even changed my towels and sheets every day. I was glad I'd booked a room with a sink, as the bathroom situation was a little weird. Not sure how it was on other floors, but on mine there were only two women's bathrooms for the whole floor. One only had two showers in it, and the other had two toilets, three open showers without shower curtains, and one sort of "shower closet" behind a closet door. The two-shower bathroom was periodically locked, so I had to choose between baring it all in one of the curtain-less showers or hoping that no one peeped the window on the closet shower. I opted for the closet shower, although the setup was still weird enough that in order to actually get my towel, I had a quick brave moment of whipping open the closet door and hoping no one walked in while I exposed myself. So, would this be my top choice for staying in NYC? Oh no. But would I consider staying here again? Surprisingly....yes. And maybe next time I'll actually have time to use the sauna. Oh, one more thing--when I booked it, I was thinking it was right next to Grand Central station. Not the case. It's about a 10-minute walk.
Perfect! Like a dorm room in college, hostel style facility and super clean! Its quiet, has security, nice & efficient staff, full gym access w pools, steam and sauna rooms + massages available. Yes, the heater does have a hourly banging noise but after night 2, I could sleep through it.
You get what you pay for. Always had a good time here 3 stays. Yes, the rooms are very small but always clean. Employees are super friendly and the gym is perfectly equipped! Plus the location is just steps away from midtown Manhattan so this is the perfect starting point for all your NYC adventures.
The staff was plain rude. You cannot check in early. The radiator makes so much noise about every hour so at night expect to wake up numerous times. Shared bathroom was dirty. The location is good but hopefully everything is right with your room because staff wouldn’t help at all. Overall, good price would have been better but staff needs to make a good impression.
If you are on a budget and don't mind shared facilities, it's not a bad option. I never had to wait for the toilet or shower even though it is shared with the whole floor. The window AC unit was sufficient and kept the room nice and cold. Towels and linens were changed daily and the bathroom was kept quite clean.
If you’re on a budget and just need somewhere decent to sleep/shower for a weekend New York trip - I would highly recommend just staying here. It’s not a fancy hotel so don’t expect amenities of that sort. Rooms are small but that’s a given, since it’s the city. It’s surprisingly clean, well insulated warm and cozy during the wintertime and sharing the bathroom/ shower area on your floor will bring back memories of your college dorm room days. There were some plumbing issues on the bathroom on my floor but it wasn’t a big deal. There are additional rest rooms and showers in the downstairs gym/ pool area that you can use as well. Also, it’s very safe with security guards screening ppl at the front. This was perfect for us and we saved a lot of money that we used on eating good food instead! Thanks YMCA!
