Vashon Green School, (formerly Homestead), is an independent primary school (K-3) on Vashon Island. Dana Schuerholz, founder, director, instructor.
VASHON GREEN SCHOOL (K-3) creates a vibrant, lively, forum for students to discover, invent, create, learn and teach. Classes are held inside around tables and chalkboards as well as outside throughout the 7-acre campus of farm and woodland. Applied learning methodologies include math while seeding, planting, and harvesting in the field, science around wetlands with macro-invertebrates, plant-cell diagrams with microscopes in the greenhouse, art and poetry in the pasture with chickens and sheep, anatomy and micro-biomes in the barn with the goats and permaculture design projects throughout the land. A small teacher/student ratio and broad range of thematic activities integrates visual, auditory, kinesthetic, logical and linguistic learning modalities.
The VGS mission is to provide a learning environment where:
• children’s unique ways of knowing are honored
• connections to each other, humanity and the natural world deepen
• sustainable solutions grow
• engaged global citizens are inspired
