I called 404 at 4am after finding out my rabbits had eaten his fair share of one of my house plants that was deemed ‘toxic to pets’. They were so kind and compassionate. They conducted some quick research and set my mind at ease that the risk was relatively low in this particular case. I’m so thankful for the advice I received and the time they took to help me. Attaching a photo of the plant muncher for penance.
"Sorry, we can't stabilize yout dog. We'll have to put her down..." This was the doctor's verdict 6.5 hours after we brought our beloved 10 year old boxer with an outbreak of arythmia to 404 ER on May 1 2022. I asked if we have 15 minutes to get there to say "good bye". The doctor said "yes". We jumped in the car, drove to the hospital as fast as we could, called the reception, and were told that we have to wait, as another family is euthanasing their pet, and there is only one room. We paced in circles on the parking lot, weeping, imagining that Nikky our dog is living her last moments right now, and cannot see or feel us around her... finally, a devastated family exited the building, and we were let in. Still, no sign of Nikky. I wanted to scream! What are we waiting for??? If she is still alive, please bring her to us! We want to say good bye while she still can recognize us! I hear laughter and conversation behind the closed door. Finally, I can't stand this anymore... I open the door and enter the corridor... and... what??? A nurse is waking Nikky on a leash.. and Nikky walks not lying on a stretcher unconscious and wiggles her tail and is happy to see us! .. The remainder of this horrible day is like in a smog: the nurse is asking if we are familiar with the procedure and if we are sure.. We parents and 2 daughters yelling "NO" in chorus. The nurse asking us to sign the waiver: that we go against a medical advice what??? Medical advice to kill the dog, otherwise she'll die! ???. The doctor saying that Nikky has at most one week to live and will die suffering... It's June 3rd today, and Nikky is back to her normal self: playful, silly, happy and constantly hungry. Yes, it wasn't easy, nor cheap. We had to take her to a vet cardiologist and we were babysitting her 24x7 for 2.5 weeks... But, the 404 ER didn't even offer us that option!!! We burried Nikky in our minds right there on the parking lot while we were waiting. So much unnecessary suffering for the whole family! I will never go there again!
I am very thankful to the team for taking care of my cat. Everyone is friendly, caring, understanding, and professional. The technician understood the urgency of the situation and accepted the patient immediately. They won’t make you wait if the case is critical. The doctor was thorough. She took her time explaining the situation and treatment options in detail. The bill was reasonable. They took a very good care of our Carter who is an 18-year old cat. So far, it was the best animal ER experience.
The staff at 404 are some of the best. We brought our 4 year old pup, Moose, in on Saturday morning after a night of vomiting and becoming lethargic. They were kind, caring and compassionate. We received update calls daily and sometimes multiple times a day. Unfortunately, Moose took a turn for the worst and was not doing well despite everything their caring team was doing for us and him. Every visit we had we were constantly reminded how amazing our boy was and what a good dog he was. They took their break times to be with him and they made sure he was loved beyond words. Moose was a people dog, he loved people, always tried to make everyone around proud of him. Unfortunately on Wednesday we had to say goodbye to our sweet boy. His organs were shutting down and his body was tired. They made this time so special and calming for us. I have been with other pets during euthanasia and this time was by far the best. He was loved by them, we were cared for by them and I couldn't ask for anything more at such a difficult goodbye with our young boy. Thank you to all the staff who helped to try to save our boy, we are forever grateful for the care he received. And thank you for making our goodbye more comfortable despite being the most difficult decision ever. We appreciate you all. -Megan and Aiden Tunstead
The staff at 404 Emergency Vet Care were absolutely amazing and compassionate with my circumstances. My dog Chapito was near death when he first came in. I remember hearing the vets softness in her voice and she gave me the news. Dr. Gillis was there for every step of the way informing me of my dogs health and what I needed to do. I am over the moon that we found a way to save his life and was able to transfer him to the Vaughn-Richmond Hill Vet Clinic for his kidney stone surgery. It was thanks to these wonderful angels that my fur angel is still alive. The work you do is so deeply appreciated and I am furever grateful ‍
Twice, one of our animals has had a problem and I haven’t known if it was serious or not. I have called the clinic and spoken to a vet tech for a number of minutes, had them tell me what I can do at home and that the problem was not an emergency. They did this for free. Two nights ago, our dog was very sick because both dogs got into compost but the bigger dog threw up and cleared his system. My husband took the really sick one in while I watched the other one. I called to give the details etc. and the the receptionist took lots of time with me. Finny stayed over night and was treated and monitored. I got a call in the morning from the Dr and got an update. They kept him until the afternoon to be sure. Called us again and arranged for pick up. Excellent care and communication. Vets in Canada have a harder time with the public because we don’t pay directly for our care. I heard one person complain about being charged $200 for an x-Ray saying that was really expensive. For a human without OHIP, the average x-ray costs $1366. MRI are $340-2100. CT are $280-2700, ultrasound average in $410. A friend in the US broke her arm. Nothing major. Over $10,000. Vets are running a business. If it doesn’t make money, it closes. Would you take a child into the dentist and get angry if they gave you an estimate for x-rays and dental surgery but you couldn’t afford it? Would you accuse them of not caring about kids? Last point in this rant! Ever been to an ER on a Saturday night? Wait 12 hours, have a 2 minute convo with the Dr as you are being checked, then a 5 minute convo with the nurse who is running from bed to bed? That’s normal on a busy night. Come back Tuesday when it’s not busy. My question for people who complain about not being given enough talk time on a busy night is who’s pet do you want to die well, the doctor spending half an hour talking to you? Vets have one of the highest rates of suicide. Dealing with the general public is the reason why. If people did a little research 5 minutes for me to find non OHIP prices and used a little logic busy nights at human and pet ERs mean less time maybe they would appreciate vets and stop treating them so badly.
I highly recommend VCA Canada 404 Veterinary Hospital for any of your pet emergencies. I have to thank all the great staff for your care of my furry family members over the years, most recently Clyde. Like your human emergency room counterparts, you deal with so many issues of varying severity which means long wait times are sometimes inevitable. But I have to thank you for your staying power and your exceptional care for all of your patients. Your advice, professionalism and respect for pet owners and all the difficult considerations that come with making decisions about our pets is so appreciated. Sandra and Clyde who's doing much better.
This team saved my dog’s life after he got a foreign object lodged in his esophagus. He had to have major surgery to get it removed, and was in the ICU at this hospital for two nights. During that time, a team of compassionate nurses and doctors took very good care of him and were so patient and helpful when we kept calling for updates on his condition. They were all very transparent about the risks and the costs of my pup’s procedure and recovery. While he is still on the mend, his incision is healing perfectly, and we’re confident he will make a full recovery. Thank you for everything VCA!
I will never forget the day my mother and I brought my cat ACE into this hospital as he was very sick and needed treatment. At the time of this event my mother and I didn't have much money at our disposal, it was bad timing for us. Ace was dying and needed treatment. The vet told us that Ace had two options. Option #1: A temporary fix that would give Ace relief but most certainly would not recover. Option #2: almost 4x the cost of option #1 but would definitely save Ace and help him recover. We had asked if there were any financial options for us at the time and the vet said NO. I told the vet we could not afford option #2 and she just said "sorry, there's nothing we can do". I talked to the front desk lady and she had ZERO empathy for me and my mother. She had even LESS empathy than the vet had for us. I was in shock. In the end, my mother gave her last hard working earned dollars as she put it on visa and Ace Died shortly after that night. I will never forget the traumatic experience your business has put me and my mother through. It has taken me over 5 years to muster up the courage to write this review. In fact, I made it my business to work hard and to EARN so that we would never be held in this position again. I wish I remembered your names personally as they would be held accountable in this review. Businesses like this are the soul reason people don't trust vets. Because when it comes down to it, if you don't have the cash, say goodbye to your loved pets.
We brought our sweet Beatsey to the hospital 3 days ago with a cough and trouble breathing. They took him in immediately and started critical care to him. They did what they could to try and save his life and kept us informed the entire time. Unfortunately our baby boy could not be saved. They brought him to us to say goodbye with such loving care. They are angels. Thank you for letting our dear boy die with such dignity.
