Description

Greetings from Vermont Shepherd! Nestled in the hills of Westminster West, VT rests Patch Farm. The 250 acre farm is run by David and Yessenia Ielpi Major. There they run a sheep dairy with a milking herd of 170 ewes and make cheeses and a sheep's milk yogurt. Vermont Shepherd cheeses include:
Vermont Shepherd: This pure sheep's milk cheese is aged for 3-6 months to achieve a smooth, creamy texture and a delicate tangy, slightly nutty flavor. Almost twenty years ago, Vermont Shepherd was the first sheep's milk cheese is the country and it continues to be a favorite today. Due to its limited supply, Vermont Shepherd is only available from August through January, except at our farm store.
Invierno: Our winter cheese. Invierno is made by blending the rich, Autumn sheep's milk with cow milk from Live Water Farm up the road. This unique blend of milks gives the cheese its pungent spicy flavor. Invierno is aged in our cave for 5-15 months. Meaning winter in Spanish, Invierno is the only cheese we produce during the winter months. It is also our only cheese available year round!
Ricotta Lana: This is a traditional sheep's milk ricotta. Made only during the summer from the way of the sheep's milk, this ricotta salata is light, sweet and only slightly salty. This fresh milk cheese is only available during the summer months. Ricotta Lana is a favorite of Lana, David and Yessenia's daughter and the cheese's namesake.
Sheep's Milk Yogurt: Rich, creamy and tangy this yogurt is reminiscent of a Greek style yogurt and perfect for those who cannot eat cow's milk. This summer treat is delicious with granola or cut fruit and much missed when Fall brings an end to its season.
Come visit our farm store to see which local products we carry to accompany the cheese or visit our website for more information. We hope to see you on the farm!

This place was somewhat difficult to find and waaaaay off the beaten path. It consists of several buildings and it wasn't obvious which was the retail portion of the farm. We finally figured out the correct building after being aided by a friendly dog who trotted up to the "store" and I use the term loosely and lay down in the doorway, forcing me to step over him to enter. No person was there and there was no easily discernible way to make a payment for anything purchased honor system?. No way to taste any of the cheeses all goat's milk, though they apparently have cows as well and the prices were astronomical. Approx. $20 for 6 oz., even 8 oz., of cheese, no matter how good it is, was too rich for my taste so we ended up buying nothing and being very annoyed at having to drive so far. Not sure whether we'll attempt a visit to a different cheese company also on a farm; looks closer to Brattleboro, where we stayed but that's a decision for next year.
Small self serve shop with sheep's milk cheese, eggs, maple syrup and soap. They take cash, checks and venmo.
Bought a pint of Fig Brule gelato and it is too amazing! I need to come back for the other flavors!
Update: Daniel from Vermont Shepherd reached out to address my concerns from a prior order. I really appreciate him reaching out and explaining what happened, it means more to me that they understand my complaint. Now their cheese is outstanding, we actually purchased their cheese from City Market Onion River Co-op and it was amazing. Wish you guys the best of luck and continued success. Seems like good cheese. Ordered a gift for Father's Day and the cheese arrived warm with ice packs melted. If you're going to buy from them I would do so in person.
The cheese from VT Shepard Farms is absolutely delicious.. it's aged to perfection and the entire farm is awesome.. the family that owns the farm are the friendliest people ever and they are always avail to show u around. The farm store is a small hut like house with a refrigerator full of cheeses and there's wool!! and jams!! and soaps!! .. all made there and at a sister farm. I recommend horse back riding and renting the house on the premises for the weekend and explore Vermont peacefully and naturally.. did I mention a pond? Shhh theres a pond.. love this place
Phenomenal sheep/cow cheese in a very cute tiny store.
