Description

The Village of Upper Nyack, population ca. 1,800, was incorporated in 1872. The first settlement in the Village was recorded in 1686.

The Village Hall, built ca. 1877, was once a tavern and then grocery store before being divided into businesses. The municipality purchased the building in 1973. A number of properties in the Village are listed on the National Register of Historic Places: Van Houten’s Landing Historic Neighborhood, which dates to 1798, and Empire Hook and Ladder Co. No. 1’s fire house, which was built in 1887. The Old Stone Meeting House (formerly Old Stone Church), built in 1813, was the oldest church in Rockland County in its original building before being acquired by the Village in 2005.

In the late nineteenth century, the Village became known as “Goosetown,” a name that is still used affectionately today.

The Village Board of Trustees and Land Use Boards meet monthly. All meetings are open to the public.
