VTS (Greenacre School's vocational training program) currently serves 26 students. We teach job skills and employment readiness to students with mild to moderate developmental disabilities. The program is based on "project-based learning" to help support students that have difficulty with the classroom setting, often resulting in behavioral challenges. Providing them with a setting that is essentially an outdoor classroom, we found an effective way to engage the students to learning. Our motto is to “focus on the student’s abilities rather than disabilities”
By incorporating the craft of drum making into the program, the students learn about construction and design as well as developing their motoric skills. The students having the opportunity to play the instruments, that they themselves created, gives the students sense of pride as well as having therapeutic benefits.
