Wakamatsu Farm

About

cultural & historical interpretation, sustainable agricultural practices, restoration & maintenance of natural resources, education & recreation

Description

This community farm boasts a rich tapestry of wildlife habitat, diverse cultural history, productive farming soils, and educational opportunities. The 272-acre site contains an 8-acre lake, 3 ponds, wetlands and the headwaters of Granite and Shingle Creeks which flow into the South Fork American River near Lotus. The property provides valuable habitat for native wildlife. Oak woodlands are separated by a broad band of excellent farming soil. The American River Conservancy preserves and interprets the cultural resources that still remain, including Charles Graner's original 1854 farmhouse, Okei San's gravesite, and turn-of-the-century Veerkamp barn and dairy. The National Park Service has placed this farm on the National Register of Historic Places at a level of "National Significance". The American River Conservancy will continue to develop infrastructure and restore historic buildings that promote our vision for the farm. We need your help to make this happen. We have many opportunities for volunteers and the general public to get involved.

Very nice place for a picnic they only open couple times a month from spring to autumn, historic site about Japanese people in America, if you read the book about Okei-san the girl from wakamatsu you will had a better idea about the place and the history. Bring water and a hat to walk around the lake.
Excellent Intro to Mushrooms class and walk. Learned what to note when collecting and steps to classify. Elizabeth was clear and informative. Very nice property which we saw a bit of in our foraging.
Such a beautiful place!
I really enjoyed learning the local history of the site where the first Japanese-American immigrants lived. The docents are extremely friendly and knowledgeable. Highly recommended! There is also a beautiful pond and a tea house on the site.
Lots to learn, looks like great events too
This is a very nice place to learn about history. The guides here are very kind, giving us water and umbrellas to help cool down. There is a beautiful trail nearby what I believe is a lake. However, if you don't like walking around alot, then I don't recommend you to come.
First Japanese colony in the U.S. Historical landmark close to Sacramento. Check website for Open Farm days and activities.
Wakamatsu Farm is an incredible place of rich cultural, historic and natural resources. Amazing to have the site of the first Japanese colony in America right here in El Dorado County ~2 miles from where gold was discovered in California!
Wakamatsu Farm and American River Conservancy had a great festival honoring the Japanese and other history of the foothill area and many unique contributions from this place: native plants, samurai, silk, music, tea, Japanese culture and treasures.
Beautiful lake, lots of bird songs, quiet and many trees.
