Wake Forest dedicates itself to fostering “habits of mind that ask ‘why,’ that evaluate evidence, that are open to new ideas, that attempt to understand and appreciate the perspectives of others, that accept complexity and grapple with it, that admit error, and that pursue truth.” Advising at Wake Forest reflects this vision, and aspires to encourage students on a personal journey—one in which courses chosen and decisions made both inside and outside of the classroom are intentional, and reflect exploration, open-mindedness, creativity, appropriate risk-taking and willingness to learn from challenges
The Office of Academic Advising has welcomed more than 5000 student visits since its opening in August 2009. The office in 125 Reynolda Hall seeks to provide a comprehensive system for monitoring student progress and for intervening as early and as proactively as possible when problems begin to arise. To that end, we monitor student course registrations, encourage the faculty to report absences and other behavioral problems, and pay close attention to midterm and final grade reports and degree evaluations. We have adopted a new “Academic Action Plan” contract for making clear our expectations of students who have been on probation or experienced similar academic difficulties in prior semesters, and meet actively with such students. In all cases, we work closely with student life, career development, counseling and other staff to enhance Wake Forest's efforts to mentor and educate the whole student.
