Walden's purpose transcends intellectual pursuits and academic achievement. We offer an organic, evolving environment that educates the whole person.
Who We Are:
We are a community of learners dedicated to educating the whole person. We challenge students to develop academic skills, social and emotional abilities, and creative capacities in a collaborative environment, enabling them to take ownership of their education and reach their highest potential.
Walden Community School was started in 2002 by Dr. Carol Mikulka as a best-of-practice, child-centered elementary school, and an alternative to large-classroom public schools and high-pressured private schools. Walden is currently serving grades K-9th, with plans to expand/re-open the accredited high school program in the future.
Walden’s educational philosophy centers upon Multiple Intelligence Theory, brain-based learning, the Finnish educational system of integrated curriculum, and Alfie Kohn’s Education Theory, which highlights creating a classroom community based on personal responsibility, respect, and intrinsic motivation. Walden teachers not only ensure that grade-level benchmark standards are being met, but also provide differentiated instruction and learning opportunities for our gifted, creative, and talented students. They recognize each student’s strengths and areas of challenge, understanding that students learns differently. Walden Community School provides a safe space for taking academic risks.
Walden is accredited by SACS (Southern Association of Colleges and Schools) Advanc-Ed and offers a unique educational experience in Central Florida.
Educating the whole person is our commitment. Focusing on social, intellectual, emotional, and physical aspects of learning ensures each student reaches his or her highest potential, need for self fulfillment and self actualization. Our ultimate goal is accomplished when our students invest in and take ownership of their education and their futures.
