Contained within the Center for Environment and Society, the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Program provides technical support for faculty research programs and faculty academic courses, provides technical support for other administrative units on campus, and pursues externally funded research grants and contracts unique to GIS. The program’s mission is to promote and foster the use of geospatial technology in education and research at Washington College and the larger Maryland, Delaware, and Pennsylvania community as a whole. We seek to encourage interdisciplinary collaboration amongst faculty and staff while engaging our students in real-world experiential learning opportunities with groups in the local community who can benefit from using geographical information and spatial analysis. Our goals are to:
* To foster geospatial research within Washington College and the regional community.
* To provide geospatial technical services to Washington College and the regional community.
* To encourage interdisciplinary collaboration amongst faculty, staff, students, and organizations in the local community who can benefit from using geospatial technologies.
* To provide real-world experiential learning opportunities for students allowing for the development of critical thinking and spatial analytic skills.
