Washougal Memorial Cemetery

About

The "WMC" covers an area of approximately 12 acres, designed for over 8,000 full graves and several options for cremated remains.

Description

The Washougal Memorial Cemetery provides the largest public burial grounds in Washougal. The Sons of David Shepherd operated and maintained the earliest graves, known as the “Pioneer Cemetery” – now referred to as “Section A”. New management by Lodge Number 194 of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows (IOOF) reflected this name change and expanded the grounds to add “Section B”. A successful petition by citizens resulted in the City of Washougal assuming ownership of the IOOF cemetery in December of 1944.

The earliest recorded grave belongs to Jacob Gibbons (1837-1858), located in Section A-IOOF, Lot 31.

John Meier, reputed as a survivor of the 1876 Battle at Little Big Horn, rests in Lot 99 of Section B-IOOF. Historical reports reveal very little information about this man; however, records strongly indicate Private John Meier survived “Custer’s Last Stand” to find his final resting place in the Washougal Memorial Cemetery in 1917.
