The mission of WAVE Reading Health is to enable all New Mexico 3rd grade students to reach their optimal reading proficiency.
Why do so many children struggle with learning and reading? Many studies have demonstrated that most children who struggle with learning entered kindergarten 1-3 years behind in the foundational skills required to learn effectively, the Skill Gap. Reading proficiency is foundational to academic and life success. New Mexico perennially ranks in the lower 10% nationally for reading proficiency.Despite significant efforts to date, too many children fail to become proficient readers. Generally, schools are effective at teaching grade-level curriculum to learning-ready children, but do not have the resources to provide the intensive, individualized training needed to close the Skill Gap. The secret to success is to find a way to help schools close the Skill Gap in grades K-2 to prevent most reading difficulties.
WRH was created to help schools gain access to online reading support tools that can help to close the Skill Gap combined with a managed volunteer program to help deliver an affordable solution
