The Wedgeway Barber Shop is the oldest shop in town. Established in 1912, the Wedgeway Barber Shop has been servicing Schenectady for over 100 years.
The Wedgeway Barber Shop was established in April of 1912, and will celebrate its 105th Anniversary next year! Wedgeway is believed to be the oldest continuous working barber shop in the Northeast and is home to many old artifacts such as its cash register, porcelain pedestal sinks, mirrors, antique bottles, and working outdoor barber pole. Wedgeway also prides itself on serving many famous and notable customers over the years. While there are too many to list here, one such client is Dr. Ernst Alexanderson of Schenectady, who in 1939 showed the very first viewing of television at his home. This General Electric employee has accomplished many patents at his place of work, the most notable being the television and its parts. Richard DiChristofaro is privileged to have cut this gentleman’s hair. Dawn Taylor is the present Owner
The Wedgeway Barber Shop is situated at the corner of State St. and Erie Blvd. in downtown Schenectady. Erie Blvd, which was formerly part of the Erie Canal, plays a significant role in many of the discussions between employees and clients. Prior to being filled in during 1924, this portion of the Canal allowed the community and employees of the General Electric Company to ice skate during the winter.
Schenectady is home of The General Electric Company and The American Locomotive Company which was instrumental in making steam engines for many years. This company, however, was later solicited to convert its efforts to making tanks and armament for our country during WWII.
Wedgeway Barber Shop is currently owned by Richard DiCristofaro. Richard began working at Wedgeway in 1962, and will celebrate his 50th year of service in 2012. He is proud to hold the longest tenure of any of the shop’s previous owners or operators.
Along with his employees, Dawn Taylor, Heather Bynum, and Justyn Staley, enjoy discussing the history of the shop and its relationship to Schenectady. If you stop in to Wedgeway you are sure to be met with professionals who take pride in their city, as well as their experience in all phases of tonsorial knowledge.
