West Point Cemetery

Description

West Point Cemetery is an historic cemetery in the eastern United States, on the grounds of the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, New York. It overlooks the Hudson River, and served as a burial ground for Revolutionary War soldiers and early West Point inhabitants long before 1817, when it was officially designated as a military cemetery.Northwest of the cadet area, it was known as "German Flats" before its formal designation as the official cemetery in 1817. Until that time several small burial plots scattered in mid-post also served as places of interment. The graves from these plots and the remains subsequently found during building excavations were removed to the new site.An improved road to the cemetery was constructed in 1840, and the caretaker's cottage was erected in 1872. The cemetery is home to several monuments, including the Dade Monument, Cadet Monument, Custer Monument, Wood's Monument, and Margaret Corbin Monument.

Tons of amazing history here dating back to the Revolutionary War. Grounds are well-kept and always beautiful year round!
Rich in American history. Steeped in tradition, service to the nation, and honor for members of the long gray line now gone but never forgotten. The national cemetery at West Point, New York is truly a remarkable experience. It is a reverent and tranquil place of rest that invites visitors to step through its gates and remember those who served our nation. Walking along the gravel paths and pristine manicured grounds gives visitors a welcoming sense, as though the soldiers at rest in these hallowed grounds enjoy the company of those who take time to visit. Sunset and sunrise are my two favorite times to visit.
Very beautiful, peaceful cemetery with lots of history.
A must add to any bucket list. The beauty of the surroundings combined with the graves of some of our countries greatest heroes add to a memorable event. A must see is the chapel on the South Side. My Uncle is buried beneath the big tree. Goodnight sweet prince. We still miss you.
I drove there this morning from Thomaston Connecticut because the website says it’s open to the public. ITS NOT! I was told by the guard that without a pass or knowing someone buried there I wasn’t getting in. Regardless I appreciate those buried there that gave everything!
My Mom was born and grew up on Homestead Ave. barely outside the gates of West Point. She married one of the cadets, who has been buried inside the gates for over 15 years now. She lives with us in California and will soon be 96. It won't be too long before she completes her circle of life and returns to lay next to my father only blocks from where she started. Truly God works in mysterious ways, his wonders to behold.
What a beautiful cemetery! Such a beautiful setting and very well kept. Oct 2018
In the chapel you can see the commanders plaque where Benedict Arnold’s name has been scratched off. For you fans of Turn!
George A. Custer is buried here. Custer's last stand! Learning this in history and just beginning it.
