The West Rome Drive-in was opened as a single screen drive-in back in June of 1951. It was open for the Golden Age of drive-ins when the number of drive-in screens in the United States hit a peak of 4,063 in 1958. Today, there are 635 screens at 401 sites across the country still operating.
Conrad and Linda Zurich, the current owners, bought the drive-in in 1979. They have been in the business since 1966 and currently operate 52 screens in 9 locations including another twin drive-in in Elmira, NY. Under their ownership, the drive-in has gone through numerous changes. First and foremost, a second screen was erected in 1985 allowing customers a choice of features to view. In 2004 a new Dolby Stereo sound system was been installed on both screens and numerous changes have been made to the film projectors resulting in a dramatic upgrade of picture and sound.
And be on the lookout for even more great improvements to the West Rome Drive-in! Coming this summer will be new concession stand offerings and freshly painted screens further enhancing the picture quality.
