Congratulations to Turner Development on their new Baltimore development project; Westport. When complete, the expansive project will include a soccer stadium and attached hotel.
Westport is a 52-acre site that will include 4.8 million square feet of mixed-use development, with 2,000 residential units, two hotels, 300,000 square feet of retail, and a possible soccer arena, an estimated $1.2 billion all told. In addition, the Westport site already has a light rail stop at its center, this station will be the seed of a dense multimodal network, including wide sidewalks and a link to the city’s bike trail.
The proposed soccer-only stadium and an adjacent hotel, that could accommodate up to 500 guests, would be part of the $1.5 billion mixed-use Westport development. Light rail already goes into the neighborhood, and a second station would likely be attached to the stadium. A soccer-only stadium in Westport would also share commissaries and suite levels with the hotel. Construction could move quickly estimating approximately 18 months to two years to complete the stadium. The stadium could also host concerts and other events and become a source of revenue for the area.
Pat Turner pointed to the fact that television ratings in Baltimore for the World Cup is indicative of how such a stadium — with the possibility of D.C. United playing there — would be received in the city.
