The WF Mitchell Athletics Centre is home to the Guelph Gryphons which includes over 30 varsity sports, 23 Clubs, intramurals, camps and admin offices.
Opened in 1957 the Mitchell Centre replaced the Gymnasium and pool facility that had been between the Johnston Hall and the Bull Ring. The Mitchell Centre linked up with the arena on the south east corner of campus to provide a home for students in the School of Physical Education, varsity teams, clubs, recreational and intramural programs. Fifty-four years later it is still the centre of campus for varsity athletes, recreational, instructional and intramural athletes, club and work out activities. The original Pygmy Gardens Arena has been replaced by the Gryphon Centre Twin Pad across the street. The spirit of Pygmy Gardens has been retained in its renovation into the home of Gryphon men’s and women’s varsity volleyball.
Cardio and weight rooms have replaced the two spectator balconies over-looking the main gym. Five international squash were constructed where the dressing rooms were at either end of Pygmy Gardens and the original north American squash court have been converted into climbing walls.
