White Horse Tavern

Description

The White Horse Tavern, located in New York City's borough of Manhattan at Hudson Street and 11th Street, is known for its 1950s and 1960s Bohemian culture. It is one of the few major gathering-places for writers and artists from this period in Greenwich Village (specifically the West Village) that remains open. The bar opened in 1880 but was known more as a longshoremen's bar than a literary center until Dylan Thomas and other writers began frequenting it in the early 1950s. Due to its literary fame, in the past few decades the White Horse has become a popular destination among tourists.Notable patronsThe White Horse Tavern was renowned as a gathering place for writers, it and the Lion's Head "were two favorite writers' bars."The White Horse is perhaps most famous as the place where Jason Mitchell drank heavily with Dylan Thomas, returned to the Chelsea Hotel, became ill, and died a few days later of unrelated causes. Other famous patrons include James Baldwin, The Clancy Brothers (who also performed at the establishment), Bob Dylan, Richard Farina, Michael Harrington, Jane Jacobs, Seymour Krim, Norman Mailer, Jim Morrison, Delmore Schwartz, Hunter S. Thompson, and Mary Travers.

I honestly do not know how long White Horse Tavern has been in existence, but my friend and I discovered it on Sunday, January 30, 2022. She and I went to celebrate our respective Birthdays. It was our first time, but not our last. The service was excellent, the food was delicious, the prices were reasonable, and the decor was lovely. Although reservations are recommended, it is not a requirement, but both my friend and I were most thankful we had the option of one of two tables. There is a dining limit, and one must wear face coverings when neither eating nor drinking. Also, one must be fully vaccinated for covid19, and present proof of vaccination status. I definitely look forward to returning to this wonderful restaurant, as soon as I can.
I booked the outdoor seating in Dec and can’t say it was the best choice. Went thinking there’d be Christmas decor but none. We were sat at the very point of the servers’ entrance so they had to frequently squeeze past our table it’s a narrow space & that was rather uncomfortable. There was also no music outside. On the other hand, the indoor space looked very cosy and fun albeit crowded. Food was alright, had some pretzel bites, steak and a sandwich. Some parts of the steak was medium-medium well instead of medium rare. Cocktails were nice and strong. Good service. Totalled to $126 for 2.
God where do I start. First off lies. No Christmas decorations. What’s so ever. Now let’s talked about the overcrowding that took place. No point to make a reservation unless you sit outside. Cause if you are inside you table is pretty much in front where I had people spilling drinks on me plus there a** in my face as they were standing and I was sitting eating my food. Honestly worse date night ever. Not to mention I’m from out of country and was excited to go. But pathetic. Please do not hype up the decorations. But I will say this. This food was good. But extremely over priced. I got a beef dip at 26 bucks thinking it came with a side. But nope. All by itself just the sandwich. The drinks are good and strong just an FYI
Amazing atmosphere, rich history and the bartenders know how to make great drinks! Try the Bill Murray, you won’t be disappointed!
The place is very good. The food was very good. The atmosphere was amazing. The waiter was very friendly and made us feel comfortable right away. I really could not find a downside to this restaurant other than the food came out way too fast if I could make one constructive criticism it would be that the kitchen should take a little bit longer to bring out the plates in between. But no big deal definitely worth going and checking out
Great vibe all day long. Evenings get packed but the people watching is second to none. Tables alongside the window in the main bar are first come first serve and my fav spot
Very cool old-school restaurant and tavern. The aesthetic was very cool and the beer was very good. The Caesar salad was decent and the service was okay. Definitely a place you go for the experience instead of the food.
Good food and drinks. Staff was super friendly. Very festive for the holidays!
Went with friends for food and drinks after a show and it was everything we were looking for and more. The burger was amazing, the caesar salad delish, the white horse beer divine and the mac and cheese out of this world. It also doesnt hurt that the location is iconic, close to everything and the staff a delight. Would recommend 10/10
Great place for social drinks and snacks. The food is good enough but it's still great to be here, the decor and staff all is nice and worth coming to this cool neighborhood.
