This is a fantastic collection of dug Civil War artifacts from Stafford and surrounding counties. The owner is very knowledgeable and willing to share information with those who visit. If you are interested in the Civil War and want a glimpse of what the Union Army ate, drank, fired, and lived with, this is a great place to visit.
Though not as professional as the Mount Vernon estate exhibition it is a small museum with plenty of exhibits. It has been created by a group of private people and they are obviously in favor of the confederates. That does not hinder to appreciate all the artifacts they have dug out from the fields. They also recreated e.g. the huts the soldiers build for the winter. One gentleman showed us the whole museum and explained the exihibits and gave us background information. So we got by chance a personal tour that was very good to follow.
The gentlemen I forget his name was an amazing wealth of knowledge. I went yesterday with my girlfriend. We both loved it. An amazing collection of relics that will make most civil war museums look silly. Well worth the stop and I would like to sincerely thank the owner and the people gathered there for their hospitality towards a yankee *bring cash for admittance*
This place is a hidden gem. As a civil war buff, I found this museum amazing. If you love civil war history this is a MUST SEE! It's a bit off the beaten path, but so worth the trip! And it's only$2 a person to get in!!
5 stars! A great privately owned museum with great "tour guides" who will answer pretty much any question you have. Loads of artifacts and a few displays that will entice any Civil War buff. There is also a few war era winter huts outside. Admission is $4. Also a very good place to do research I hear.
One of the best Civil War museums I've been to, and I've been to many of them. The exhibits are wonderful, most of them behind glass in such a way that you can get close and see details that you'd miss in the displays of other museums. The folks who run the place are also extremely knowledgable and helpful.
My wife and I recently visited the White Oak Museum and could not believe what we found. This is a great place! We plan on coming back again soon and would recommend it to anyone who loves history and especially the civil war. And the gentlemen that were there were great, and truly enjoy sharing their knowledge. This is a treasure in Stafford County. See you again soon!
My ten year old boys are huge civil war fans. However being typical boys they care mostly about weapons and the soldiers who used them. This was the perfect museum for them. There was tons of artifacts. The soldier’s camp was fantastic. They could easily imagine the life of a solider after walking through it. I’ve taken them to many civil war museums and by far this was their favorite. I’ve been to many battle fields, museums and read a few books on the civil war but I still learned several new things. The men who run the museum have a passion and love for the history of the area. There great to talk to. If your looking for an in depth look at the politics of the times and battle strategy etc. this is not the museum for you. However, if you want to learn more about the common civil war soldier this is a great museum.
Loved this Stafford county treasure! Amazing collection of Civil War artifacts. So glad I got to meet Mr. DP Newton. I appreciate the work and dedication he has put into preserving the rich history of this area. My kids loved it and I left with a desire to learn more. Thank you!
This is one of the finest collections of Civil War artifacts I have ever seen. Also, the owner took a great deal of time to show me around, as well as discuss the enormous amount of research he has done over the years to save camp locations from being swallowed up by new housing developments. He has been called upon in the past to assist archeologists when new locations are found. He's quite impressive. It may not look like much from the outside, but don't be fooled. If you have any interest in the Civil War, you must stop in! Amazing!
