Wichita State University's Intensive English Language Center (IELC) was created in 1976 to educate International Students in the English language.
International Education is the Wichita State University office primarily responsible for all aspects of interaction with international students and scholars that relate to two main areas of service: #1- providing support and assistance necessary for them to achieve their educational and professional goals, and #2- ensuring institutional compliance with U.S. immigration regulations that govern their visa status.
This includes marketing WSU in other countries and recruiting international students; processing international undergraduate and Intensive English Language Center applications; advising on immigration and personal matters with appropriate referrals; providing authorized immigration documents; conducting new-student orientations; and arranging programming for international students involving the WSU campus and Wichita communities.
It also includes obtaining employment authorization, such as the H-1B Specialty Worker and J-1 Exchange Visitor programs for international faculty and staff.
In addition to serving international students, scholars, faculty, and staff, International Education also serves domestic students through its study abroad program. Its function is to promote the concept of studying outside the U.S. as part of their WSU experience; to accept and process applications for spending one or more semesters as an international student at a university in another country; to place qualified applicants in a country and school of their choice; to conduct a series of advising and pre-departure orientations; and to oversee the transfer of academic credit to their WSU academic records upon completion of their overseas studies. WSU maintains student exchange agreements with 15 universities in other countries. WSU students can request placement in any of them, or be placed at another university through an affiliated program provider.
