The Wichita State University Police Department is a commissioned law enforcement agency and the 4th largest in Sedgwick County. The department is divided into two divisions, each headed by a Captain who reports to the Chief of Police.
The Operations Division is made up of the Patrol Section and the Investigations Sections. The Patrol Section consists of three details, each made up of 6 officers, a Sergeant, and a Relief Sergeant. The First Detail Relief Sergeant also acts as the Administrative Sergeant. The Administrative Sergeant oversees the Community Policing Detail as well. The Investigations Section consists of one University Police Detective.
The Support Division is made up of the Parking Section, the Communications Section, the Records Section, and Technical Support Section. The Parking Section is made up of an Administrative Specialist and two Safety and Security Officers on each of the First and Second Details. The Communications Section is made up of two Communications Specialists (dispatchers) on each Detail and a Supervisor. The Records Section is made up of one Administrative Specialist. The Technical Support Section is made up of one Technical Support Specialist.
The Chief is assisted by an Assistant to the Chief who handles payroll, purchasing and a myriad of other duties as assigned.
The University Police Department's mission is to provide public safety and other related services to the University community in a professional and ethical manner. Members of the University Police Department strive to work in partnership with University community members to identify, prevent, and solve problems of crime and the fear of crime within our University community and to foster partnerships with our campus neighbors and other public safety professionals.
