Wildcat Canyon Regional Park

Description

Wildcat Canyon Regional Park is a 2429acre East Bay Regional Parks District park located within the city limits of Richmond in Contra Costa County in the San Francisco Bay Area of California. It includes a portion of Wildcat Canyon as well as a portion of the adjoining San Pablo Ridge, and is directly connected to the more heavily used Tilden Regional Park.HistoryThe area was inhabited by Native Americans until 1772 when a group of "Catalan volunteers" led by Pedro Fagas and Fray Juan Crespi came across the settlement while searching for trade routes north beyond the Carquinez Strait. The Spanish settled the general area and by 1840 had parceled the land for missions and cattle raising coming into conflict with the historical communal practices of the Native Americans. Juan Jose and Victor Castro were given rights to all vacant land in the area. They kept some valuable lands and gave much of the land over to municipal authorities for water usage. In 1935, the East Bay Regional Parks District acquired the land that formed Tilden Park to the South and continued to acquire land to the north of Tilden until in 1976 it had sufficient land to form Wildcat Canyon Regional Park.

Love this hike with my dog! Expect some incline but just enough to get a good view of the bay. You can also see a lot of wildlife if you go at the right times. Dog-friendliness: Great for dogs! On or off leash if they are under control. Just remember to leash your dog when passing cows. Also, I've seen at least three full grown coyotes. They get scared and run away but be on the lookout.
You can't really rate a natural area, but Wildcat is large, rugged, and has amazing views of the city and bay. It's wonderful to have such a place so close to an urban area. Dog-friendliness: People walk their dogs off-leash here, but be mindful of the free ranging cows!
This place is such a gem! There are so many different areas to explore and it’s a great spot to go running. Parking can get really busy on the weekends so I would suggest parking on the street near the neighborhoods and walking into the park. I would also suggest sunscreen and plenty of water if you were planning to do the entire hike! The trail is really open and can get really sunny. The paved portion of the trail is so spacious and wide as well as the hiking paths. It’s one of the reasons I keep coming back to this spot since hiking paths can feel so narrow to me.
I use to drive to Mission Peak every weekend based on the intensity and thrill of that hike. All until I discovered Wildcat with an equal intensity plus thrill fulfilled here. I enjoy how you can customize your outdoor gym on this trail. There are many entrances and routes to take. Whether hiking, cycling, walking, running…it’s a trail for all ages. Plenty of rest stops, gorgeous views, inclines if you’re looking for them. You’ll encounter wildlife of cows, horses, hares, deer, birds, snakes, coyotes and goats too. It’s a new adventure every time.
Great park for larger private group events. Simplicity is key here. Nothing fancy. Just a picnic area It is usually well kept and clean looking. Family & friends have been coming here for picnics and get togethers like Birthday celebrations ,reunions, memorials for as long as I can remember.. Picnic area: Lots of great picnic areas with plenty of space for large gatherings Multiple large gatherings could co-exist simultaneously without over lapping
Nice place to hike and walk your pets. But it gets busy sometimes. One of the crowdest regional parks in the area.
Only drove by and looks amazing, it's well taken care of and it seems peaceful with great views to admire. I must come back to do one of those amazing trails that you can see from far away.
Great place to hike. Took our dog and backpack full of water and snacks. Make sure you keep out for ticks ! Once we got back to the car I had 2 on me. Nothing on our dog thank god. But the sights are beautiful. There’s parts of the trails where you can take your dog off the leash and let them play around which is nice.
Got a little lost and got off the trail. Beautiful walk, but houses are right on top of the parks beauty. When I walked down the creek there was was dust and other trash strewn in a couple of spots. For the most part it is lovely and I will walk to the other side of the park to give it another chance. Walked the other side and LOVED it. Saw coyote, rabbit, birds and beautiful natural landscape. There's a few inclines to climb throughout the trails that are excellent to climb and lots of friendly dogs and people.
Nice park for little hiking. Some hills for a small challenge. Good views of bay area.
