William H. Houlton Conservation Area is a 335-acre parcel of land situated along the Mississippi River just west of downtown Elk River. The Houlton Farm property was acquired with funds from the Outdoor Heritage Fund in 2015 with the express purpose of being managed for high quality native habitat for wildlife.
The park is about a third forested and two-thirds open farmland and has more than 2 1/2 miles of combined Mississippi and Elk River frontage. The property is open to the public for year-round passive, non-motorized recreational uses such as hiking, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, bird watching, fishing, and limited legal game hunting. Trail shoes/Sneakers recommended. No bicycles, motorized vehicles, or dogs allowed. Full loop ~45 minutes-1 hour at a moderate walking pace.
