Windy Hill Open Space Preserve

Description

Windy Hill Open Space Preserve is a regional park located in San Mateo County, California and operated by the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District (MROSD). It is readily identifiable from the flatlands of the South Bay, as it is the only "naked" part of the peninsula range (not forested). The Windy Hill Preserve comprises an important 1132 acre (4.6 km2) stretch of conservation land on the eastward side of the Peninsula Range (Santa Cruz Mountains), rising from the valley road near Portola Valley to the 1905 ft (581 m) summit from which it gets its name. Access to the summit is easy (0.5 mile moderate grade) from State Route 35, the ridge road along the Peninsula Range. Facilities focus on trails for hiking and mountain biking, with around 14 miles (22 km) of hiking trails. In clear weather there are magnificent views from the summit, and indeed the entire upper end of the park, across the campus of Stanford University to the San Francisco Bay and beyond to Mount Tamalpais and Mount Diablo. Downtown San Francisco is visible, as well as the Pacific Ocean. Most of Windy Hill is sheltered from the prevailing weather, which comes in off of the Pacific Ocean. A nice day further down can be very cold, windy, foggy or rainy at the summit.

I love coming here! It's a very nice view and great hike! I always come here to enjoy the view with great company! This is one of the best spots to go relax in your car and look at the view, day or night!!
Beautiful place. Very windy. You can see the ocean behind you and the entire Bay Area in front of you. Impressive views. Don't drone. The Park Rangers are constantly looking for drone operators, as it's a wildlife and nature reserve.
Windy Hill is one of the most consistently well maintained and beautiful preserves in the area. Before embarking on your hike you can expect the trails to be well taken care of and great views included. I’ve been on all the trails in Windy Hill, and while I like some more than others, I love the nature every one of them brings. I will definitely be coming back for many more visits.
If you're looking for hikes that are around 3-4 hours in south bay, then this is the place for you. The wind keeps the place nice and cool. You get views all over the Bay including San Francisco too on a clear day.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entryFree
Beautiful views. Not too hard a hike. There are several private properties, and the trails go around them. Is easy to get confused. Phone got zero to one bars several times - having an offline map may help Found a lot of poop on the trail. The parking lot has a restroom.
Great place to hike… Wonderful place to take your dogs… People are very considerate and helpful… There are restrooms in the parking lot area… On the weekends it gets very full and there is additional parking on the street nearbyVisited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entryFree
Some nice trails, however the Spring Ridge trail does leave you pretty exposed to the sun. Hamm's gulch trail was nicely covered with trees. Lots of wildlife, saw some woodpeckers, lizards, one rattlesnake, and a coyote! Part of the spring ridge trail crosses near a big beehive. There are multiple parking lots to access the trail with bathrooms and picnic tables scattered through the perimeter of the preserve.
Amazing place to hike, lots of parking, dog-friendly, and has a public restroom at both ends of the trail.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entryFree
Amazing views. Parking can be busy but there are multiple lots and it cycles through quickly. On a clear day you can see to the ocean on the West and beyond Fremont to the East.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entryFree
