Winkler Bakery
"In 1799, the Moravian Church built a bakery with a living area for the baker and his family. In 1807, a Swiss-born baker named Christian Winkler bought the bakery. Brother Winkler, his wife Elizabeth, and their six children would live and work in this house for the rest of their lives. Winkler descendants resided and worked in the bakery for generations afterward, until 1926. The Bakery’s oven is still heated with wood as it was nearly 200 years ago."

The bakery and all of Old Salem is well worth a visit. There are two options for tickets. $20 gets you in to two buildings and $30 gets you in to all 11 buildings. I didn’t think I would find it that informative since I’ve been to other pioneer-like villages, but I was very impressed as the Moravian culture is different, and I learned a lot. If you don’t have time/money, you can also just walk around the town and not enter any of the buildings that have interpreters. We were there in March and it was very quiet and easy to park. The bakery is known for its sugar cookies and traditional sugar cake. Yummy!
Very neat place to visit. Set in a historical village setting. Very disappointed there were no maruvian cakes available for sale as it was the reason we specifically stopped at the location. The old stove was really neat to see
I have not visited the bakery to buy baked goods for 10 years. I purchased today - 1 Sugar cake, package of pumpkin muffins & Ginger Cakes. First of all, I remember very clearly how delicious EVERYTHING was there 10 even 20 years ago. I grew up visiting Old Salem. The sugar cake I purchased yesterday was not the same. Half the cake was just bread. I went to break off a piece and saw some piece of string sticking out of the top. I pulled it and it was like a fishing line. I took a picture and immediately closed it! I hoped the pumpkin muffins might be better. They switched the delicious raisins for walnuts. Do not like at all! Then decided to try a “ginger cake” I almost needed a cap on my front tooth - it was so hard I gave up and closed the entire bag up! This small bag cost me $30.00. If that wasn’t bad enough! I proceeded to call the “bakery” and tell them what ALL I had tried to eat. She was very nice and said I could get a full refund. I turned my car around and headed back down to the “Winkler”. The lady was very pleasant and refunded the entire purchase without any explanation for all the mishaps. I left feeling very sad that the Old Salem I knew and loved just didn’t care. I hope these products didn’t taste like this daily. No one seemed to even care to see what in the world the foreign object was cooked into the sugar cake. I guess the Old Salem I knew is gone. I hope it was just an off day and maybe this post will help wake up whoever is responsible for the taste and safety of what’s being sold at a very high price at Old Salem Winkler Bakery.
Got apple strudel, Moravian cookies and pecan brittle all tasty. Cannot wait to next visit!
Everything I bought and tried was absolutely DELICIOUS! My favorite thing that I will definitely be back to buy more of was the cheese stars. Staff was super friendly and helpful. Don’t miss the gift shop on the second floor.
Nice little old bakery right in Old Salem. Staff was super friendly and showed how they bake in the wood fired oven. Also gave free cookie samples. Everything we tried was delicious. Would definitely recommend if you are visiting Old Salem or the surrounding area.
The cinnamon rolls were amazing, had raisin, will definitely buy those again, 10seconds in microwave, just need a taller container, so the icing isn't completely stuck to the lid! Love the smell of the store!
Always a great place to purchase baked goods and enjoy the town of Old Salem. Check for hours for Winklers to be sure they're open.
This establishment has ALWAYS had fantastic service and products. There aren't enough positive adjectives to describe their Moravian Lovefeast Buns! I highly recommend a visit!
Old-fashioned bakery with foods like those baked in an outside wood-fire oven, so not a big selection, but it is what it is. Back in the 1700's the selection wasn't like it is today. Part of old-town Salem, NC. Lots to see in the area, and not nearly enough time to see most of it. We were only here for a couple of hours and these old legs and hips had enough.
