Excels on looks but not on warm quiet settings if you want to read or study. The front lobby entrance seems very small and congested for such a large structure. Many great books shown on long and organized shelves but sitting on concrete benches around the perimeter is not like finding a quiet corner and the comfortable spaces that libraries are noted for. The children's area on the second floor offers small active areas so that is a plus. The open theater is a nice touch but placed in the very busy center entrance area so the event sound travels through parts of the library. I am sure Winter Park will assess these areas and come up with some good ideas to bring quiet and thoughtful reading and studying spaces into the beautiful structure as time goes on. Beautiful big windows give the space a natural feel and showcase the outdoor surroundings.
Non Orange County residents can pay $60 for a 6 month pass to use their library, which includes checking out books and renting study rooms, plus other perks like adding 2 additional adults to your profile I added my sister and husband so that their kids could come enjoy the children events. The library is within walking distance to local restaurants and bars. The building’s architecture is beautiful and the grounds look to be well maintained.
Gorgeous building and surroundings. I love this public library since they were located in their old building, close to the Rollins College. But now this new location and building makes it even a more pleasant experience.
When you’re entering for the first time and ask for information on obtaining a library card and the young kid in the front is completely unfriendly, does not want to let you keep the guides so you can look through and is insanely condescending with how the library card system works. Not only did he sense the tone that he’s being offensive and unfriendly but he did not even care. Honestly, the too good for everyone attitude is going to give the WP library a bad rep very quickly. Not at all interested in a membership here after this. In the end the funny part is that the guides are available to grab on second floor either way. Looks like the library doesn’t care too much about how the employees are representing it. Oh well.
I really want to love this library, but it really lacks the main features library should have and most libraries do have: quiet study spaces WITH TABLES away from all the activity. I’ve been here at least 10 times to attempt to work. The few study rooms limited rental and the computer lab that only has 2 empty desk spaces for you to bring your own laptop are in the center of the building, right in the middle of activity and people walking by, and across from the amphitheater. There are some quieter spaces around the perimeter, but they are just benches, not tables. Where am I supposed to study and work in peace??? The old library used to have quiet space, I think on the 3rd floor. This new building is massive and beautiful, but is more of an activity center than a place to do work in. Libraries are the place where children learn about being quiet and indoor voices. There is nothing quiet about any space in the whole building. And there are hardly any study tables. This library has been open for a while now, I genuinely hope there are some construction plans to remodel sections into quiet spaces WITH TABLES. I’m so disappointed that I have to drive Elsewhere for a simple place to do work.
I had the pleasure of attending a tour of the new Winter Park Library location. I appreciate the careful thought that went into catering to the user experience. The charming aesthetics, flexible seating and open floorplan are pluses. I was also impressed by the variety of classes and programs offered which will be a haven for lifelong learners.
EXCLUSIVE and STERILE ... I use to love the former library's feel and community appeal. Myself and other families were able to gather and have special projects with our children. Now this library has become a virtual country club where you have to pay to play. Reserving rooms with ample space used to be easy for community members, now you must be "in the club" paid admission or live within specific, exclusive City of Winter Park parameters in order to use the functions of this library. I hope this library is not getting any funding from Orange County or other any other local municipalities because this library is clearly NOT for the public. Open work/study spaces have been diminished and seems like were intentionally replaced with private areas for "club" members. Just look how many times they have responded emphasizing "full access members" and what they can get. The message is clear - this library is only for those who live within the more exclusive parts of Winter Park or pay us to be in this club.
A huge building for a great collection of books, articles, and audio resources. I had hoped after the initial opening that there would be rules for the library in terms of volume. I’ve only been here a couple times but there are always screaming children running around and people talking loudly. It disturbs one of the main principles of a library: the silence to concentrate and enjoy a book. If you’re looking to study and read in peace here it is highly unlikely.
They have a very limited selection of digital audio books on their apps. Even big name authors like Stephen King. His newest book titled fairytale has zero copies of the audio book where as OCPL has 34 copies. Winter park does have 1 copy of the actual book. I’m just using King as an example the same is true for most well known authors. Structure wise I feel like whoever designed this building either didn’t know it was going to be a library or has never entered a library and/or book store. Very very creepy
Beautiful on the outside, but not functional in the slightest. The library card is not free for “all” Winter Park residents, only a certain wealthy tax sector. So even if you think you live in Winter Park, they’ll let you know if you qualify or not. Employees are quick to tell you it cost $30 million to build, however, it lacks common sense spacing and seating. At best you can fight for a small couch or sit on a bar stool behind the auditorium to get your work done. It’s clear that all are not welcomed here. Great for pictures though!
