Nice place for a short hike in early March. In the fall, likely be prepared for insects, but can't say for sure. The boardwalk path was very interesting and we did see turtles, but no alligators. We may return to look again for alligators. The boardwalk is an out .35 mile and back hike. The nature trail was about a 1 mile loop. We saw a water moccasin/cotton mouth at one point. There was a public restroom near the main building. There are some picnic tables also close to the main building.
I've always loved this park. There's a boardwalk through the bay and foliage that is really beautiful. There is a place to put in canoes and kayaks as well as a rail trail. Dog friendly. Highly recommend. You just might see some alligators and snakes if you are lucky...
Nice little park! We stopped while doing the “Ultimate Outsider” program for the State parks and we visited Dec 30th. Our highlight for the visit was Mike and his wife Marlow, both keep the park nice and clean. It’s great to walk by the trail or boardwalk without having to worry about overgrown vegetation on them, very well maintained by them. Both of them super friendly and helpful! Make sure you say hello to them when visiting the park!
There wasn't a whole lot of wildlife to see on the day I visited and the boardwalk is disappointingly short. But the park is clean And quiet
A Hidden treasure for sure. When we went there, we went on the boardwalk and saw an alligator hiding in the water. We also saw some plants with blueberries, and on the main trail, there was a snapping turtle sitting there! In the creek alongside the trail, there was also a snake. In the building, they have some cool things and there was a nice ranger inside. Amazing place! Definitely recommend it.
We went.... and took the trail on the river walk.... enjoyed sightseeing the dark waters. I thought I would see a Gator because of the posted signs that they may live there. We did not see one. It was a nice little walk... we reached the end of the river walk and Just turned around... it started thundering which sent us running . ‍ it never did have a downpour... Give it a try We went on a sunday. We did not have anything to do.... It was a quick run in search of an adventure. We did not fish because it looked like the water was low and it would be plenty of snags.... Go and enjoy the scenery. 4 stars because it was something adventurous!
Very peaceful. Ranger station was very helpful. We were lucky to have spotted an alligator. Will come again.
A hidden gem about 20-30 minutes outside of Florence! Beautiful walkway over the water where you may see adult and baby alligators, snakes, fish and turtles. A unique nature preserve with walking trails suitable for almost any level.
We stopped by this park mostly to get the ultimate outsider stamp but really enjoyed ourselves as we walked a short nature trail through the woods around the pond. The park is very well maintained. The nature center was open. They had several nice and informative nature exhibits on display as well as souvenirs available for purchase. The attendent "warned" us about the alligators they had seen earlier this morning. The trail included a board walk through the cypress tupelo swamp. We saw lots of turtles, frogs and insects but no alligators. The water is very dark and difficult to see through to the bottom even in the shallows. They also have a canoe/kayak trail available but the area to load and unload was very swamp mud mushy. Would be nice if there was a boardwalk/dock area for boaters. We also noticed the white sand that looks alot like snow along the side of the road just down from the park which is common in the Carolina Bay region
Great state park in South Carolina. There is an amazing little boardwalk through the swamp that gives the effect of just walking on water. This park is dog friendly but I would suggest keeping a good eye on pets and children because there are no railings on the boardwalk and there are alligators in the water. There are also some really enjoyable hiking trials and a great little picnic area here.
