Such a gem of an airport. Really well maintained strip and the most gorgeous arrival. There’s just nothing like it. Probably my favorite airport anywhere. You don’t need a crew car, just hop on a bike and get to town only a few miles away to enjoy a bite. And from what I gathered the campers I ran into loved it too. It’s also a quick hop to plenty of other cute airports up in that beautiful part of the country.
This was such a great place to visit! Walking around, up, and, down this gorgeous older property is real cool the story behind all of the property and the airport itself is extremely intriguing and 100% worth just swing on through and chillin while eating at the picnic tables. Your truly missing out if you don't visit!
Such a cool little spot!! The history of the family and the son who took over was really neat. It’s a great spot to stretch your legs and find a cool, non-touristy spot
Lovely little airport with one of the most scenic approaches in the country. Well maintained grass strip. Plenty of bikes to take into town, about a 20 min ride away. The airport manager was super helpful in giving recommendations of things to do, and answered all of our questions!
This is the finest grass strip I've ever seen. It's well maintained mowed, hard packed, well lit, and offers convenient cross-wind runways 34 looks a little daunting, but as long as you use Vx you should be fine. I called the airport manager, Mr. Wetherbee, ahead of flying in over the 4th of July weekend, and he could not have been more responsive, courteous, and welcoming. My wife and I flew in and camped by the plane overnight. We visited the charming town of Northport and Leelenau State Park. The State Park is walking distance from the field and offers scenic hikes through woods and sand dunes with Lake Michigan access. Northport is a little further away, but for those flying in bikes may be available at the airport contact the airport manager. If you choose to bike, it's only about 3.5 miles, an easy 20 minute ride. We met several other pilots who chose this field for their first grass strip landing while we were out there. I don't think they could have chosen a better spot. We will definitely return next summer. Cell phone coverage can be a bit spotty try climbing to the gazebo on the terminal building- that seemed to help. But there is a pay phone to close your flight plan.
This location is both dark and handicapped accessable for Aurora Hunters. Michigan Aurora Hunter favorite location. Please remember to use as little flashlight as possible and be considerate of others as this location gets very busy.
Great grass strip to fly onto for camping, we just had lunch and flew out. Bathrooms but no showers.
I stopped by the airport to take pictures of the cool stone building and met relatives of Clinton Woolsey, who the airport is named for. They shared his story. Woolsey died in a plane accident in 1927. His father donated the land for the airport. Cool place for pictures when I'm taking group to tour the nearby lighthouse. It's right on the way. #ToursAroundMichigan #GroupTours #PrivateTours #CustomizedTours
Lovely Manicured Grass Runway maintained with love for classic airplanes! Rag wings and the nose gear in the rear.
Large runways, picnic tables, and restrooms.
