Worcester City Hall and Common

Description

The Worcester City Hall and Common, the civic heart of the city, are a historic city hall and town common at 455 Main Street in Worcester, Massachusetts. The Common, established in 1669, originally encompassed about, compared to its present size of. A meeting house used for both town meetings and religious functions was constructed on the Common in 1719, on the same site as the current City Hall. In 1763, the first meeting house was demolished and what became known as The Old South Meeting House was constructed on the site. It was here, on July 14, 1776, that Isaiah Thomas publicly read the Declaration of Independence for the first time in New England.Near the center of the Common is the meeting house's burial ground, marked by gravestones and the Bigelow Monument. The Soldiers' Monument, located near the northeast corner of the Common, honors the 398 Worcester soldiers killed in the American Civil War. The Burnside Fountain, located near the southeast corner of the Common, provided water for horses, and features the sculpture Boy with a Turtle, commonly known as "Turtle Boy."Worcester City Hall was designed by Peabody & Stearns and built by the Norcross Brothers in 1898. The Italianate structure was built with a granite exterior, and was partly modeled after Italian Renaissance palazzos. Its tower shares some similarity to that of the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence, Italy, and the interior of the building extensively uses marble, commonly seen in Italian Renaissance buildings, and features an interior courtyard where the upper floors have balconies supported by decorated round arches. City Hall is currently the 4th tallest building in Worcester.

I enjoyed the art gallery for the most part in the hallways. Got to speak with some of the staff so that was pretty cool. Wouldn’t mind visiting the city again... the trees in most places are a beautiful deep green which I LOVE. Omg I fell in love walking around some of the parks so beautiful.
What a nice building. So clean and organized, runs like a well oiled machine. The staff we spoke with were so friendly and efficient. Unlike Springfield City Hall, they have a free staffed parking garage to use while conducting business there. Even this guy was very nice. Just outside City Hall is an ice skating rink with a very large Christmas Tree, it all looks beautiful.
I was born here in Worcester moved to Nevada for 8 years got married and couldn't wait to take my husband back here. When we got here in 2021 what an embarrassment Worcester is nothing but a dump. Why is the city not doing anything to clean it up . So sad
It’s a very beautiful building. I love the design of it and the Christmas decorations on the windows.
I just was hung up on by Linda from the assessor's office. OMG! She was horribly rude. She said she could not help and would not help!
I'm not sure it was because I came at the end of the day or it's because of COVID. Don't seem to be many people here and there was no waiting line at all for me to see the treasure and tax collector. I'm glad that they still have free parking for the visitors. You don't see that anymore at many public places, especially where they provide civil service such as City Hall. Kudos to Worcester City Hall!
It was a nice old building and no issue taking care of business there
City Hall is one of the beautiful buildings downtown that reminds me of Worcester's history. Imagine how many generations and ways of life these buildings have witnessed?
I was in and out of city hall in 10 mins with birth certificate. Apparently, they have free 30 minute underground parking for those who need to handle business at the Worcester City Hallvery convenient. I was about to spend $20 down the street, and walk, but the guy I spoke with was nice to let me know. Just a little heads up!
I went here to do some business and I was able to get right in and right out. I had a great experience at the clerk's office. The staff was very friendly.
