Yellow Jacket Stadium

Description

The home of Cleburne football for the last 70 years has become the first stadium in the state to receive a Recorded Historical Landmrk designation from the Texas Historical Commission.

Efforts to receive the historical designation began two years ago, led by members of the Johnson County Historical Commission. Underwriting for the marker was provided by the Cleburne Athletic Booster Club.

“As marker chair for the Johnson County Historical Commission, I am thrilled that Yellow Jacket Stadium is the first stadium in the state to receive Recorded Texas Historical Landmark designation by the Texas Historical Commission,” said Wilma Reed.

“Personally, it is like honoring a dear, old friend,” Reed said. “As a color guard, I marched on the field with the Cleburne High School band and watched football games from the stands in the 40’s. One of my daughters and two of my grandchildren received their graduation diplomas in ceremonies at Yellow Jacket Stadium. I remember attending other important events there. We appreciate school personnel, trustees, CABC and everyone else who assisted in making this honor possible.”

The marker will be located adjacent to the ticket booth, outside the stadium fencing, to allow for public viewing at all times. A plaque originally located at Rhome Field, the first home of the Jackets, is also displayed at the stadium.

Construction began on a new stadium for Cleburne High School in 1939 under the direction of the Works Project Administration, which provided most of the funding for the $80,000 facility. Limestone for the structure, located on six acres of what had been pastureland, came from neighboring Somervell County. The stadium, with seating for 3800 fans, opened in 1941.

“No stadium has more history in the state of Texas, from its construction by the WPA to the many things that have gone on there, including the victorious season of Cleburne’s 1959 state championship team,” said Vance Castles, CABC past-president. “We all, as a community, need to understand our historical roots. We must never get away from that. We must be rooted in our heritage.”

Cleburne High School’s place in Texas football history is also on display at the Texas State History Museum in Austin. The trophy from the first UIL high school football state championship, awarded to CHS in 1920, is among the artifacts featured in “Texas High School Football: More Than the Game,” an exhibit dedicated to the teams, the bands and the fans of Friday night football. The exhibit runs through January.

Old school open air high school stadium, parking can be a challenge
Thus place is so cool! Built in the 40's by the WPA, it has a unique and wonderful character that makes it the heart of this community. An Intimate scale, grass field and the visitor side bench is so close that if you're in the first 3 rows, you can hear the coaches encouraging their players. While it is the antonym of Modern, it is the definition of Old School Excellent.
I love history this buildings is almost a 100 years old, give it about 6 more years. Nice thing about this stadium is they can't level it like they do to all the others. It's registered in national historical society, so this puppy get's to stay around for a bit longer.
The stadium is nice but it needs work. The field needs to be turf to have a nicer look to it and iy would he cheaper in the ling run to manage it. The press box is way to small with the stairs inside being very narrow and steep. The stands are ok other then they have areas where things can fall under them which would be a easy fix. But all in all it has good staff and a wonderful team it hosts!
No available visitor parking. And what little they had was closed off for their own buses. Our buses had to park in a family dollar parking lot. And our parents had to park all throughout the adjoining neighborhood. The visitor entrance was a huge mud puddle and the way it is fenced left no way around it. Horrible field for a 5a school. Announcer also announced calls before they had been signaled on the field. Announced first downs for the home team on a couple of occasions when they were not and the ref had to correct the confusion on the field. Also announced the home team had recovered a fumble and now had possession when they didnt. Worst 5a stadium I have ever seen. Worse than most 4a and 3a stadiums as well.
Love this place my son marquis Jr about to make a name for his self here.
I was employed as a school worker slash School official chain crew for the Cleburne Independent School District about 7 years is one of the most historic football stadiums in Texas the rocks that were placed by veterans from one of the world wars who volunteered to help build it it's a great monument and a great field
