The YMCA of Kingston has never looked so good after a massive overhaul of upgrades in 2020! I knew the pool was being replaced which is now state of the art, but I also was impressed with the brand new parking lot and accessibility, 3 brand new gym floor surfaces, and brand new locker rooms. I grew up using the Y, but the Y was never a state-of-the-art facility it is now. And it is always better to support a charitable organization over a for-profit gym in my opinion!
The swim lessons for kids is the most disorganized function I have ever seen. The swim instructors don't show up and for the instructors that do show up having to double or triple up on kids. Only allowing your child to be in the water 1 or 2 times. The first class of the session everyone showed up but no one said anything about being cancelled. This isn't a one time occurrence either.
I love the youth farm initiatives and many other community programs this YMCA does. My main issue is with the pool and workout facilities. It is extremely difficult to get a pool reservation and the new reservation system has made this even worse. You always have to share a lane with other swimmers which makes it impossible to practice certain strokes. The cancellation window in the system is also two hours before, which many people miss. It should be reduced to 30-60 minutes before, as sometimes you show up and the pool is half empty because people couldn’t come, but they also couldn’t cancel their reservation to give it to some one on the wait list. I wish they would either increase their pool hours or expand to add another pool to their facility. I have been to several other YMCAs and all of them don’t even require swimming appointments, you can just come as you please. Some had more than one pool. They all also had swimsuit drying machines and lockers with digital locks built in, which this one does not have. Many people are only members of this YMCA for lap swimming in the pool. I just hope they can find a way to invest in that a bit more as there is obviously demand between lap swimmers, open swimmers, swim teams, and summer camp.
This facility has been improved dramatically over the past 2 years, including: Men's and Women's Locker Room renovations, New Gym Floors 3 gyms, New Entrance lobby, New Parking Lot and Landscaping, Total new Pool with: new filters, lighting, climate control, pool surface. Brand new Steam Rooms.
This Place opens up whenever they feel like. If the wind blows in the wrong direction this place will close. They Sent out an Email saying they would open at 10 only to never opened at all. if your employees do not like coming to work just say so! mind you, every other gym was open. And the roads were fine. Ended up being a line of cars and people at the door waiting for them to open to no avail. A lot of people were upset. Went to PF and got a pass for the day. For the amount of money this place isn't worth it. on top of that the machines and equipment are outdated. Only real major benefit is the pool and ball court. Its pretty dusty, meaning needs a better clean. Inside the lockers are nasty ,the weight room mirrors are broken! so on and so on. Hadn’t been there in years and figured to give them a try. Definitely will not be renewing
There’s not much to do at the ymca other than the basketball gyms. My 8 year old can’t utilize anything other than the gyms that are always packed with older kids, and the pool whenever there is availability, which is Never. The YMCA in Kingston has gone downhill. Used to be an outlet for my kids and I, but they took anything out that families can enjoy together such as the game room. Now there is minimal pool Hours and capacity which makes it impossible to get a time slot for my family of 5 to be in the pool at the same time. Absolutely waste of money for the membership.
Great youth programming Swimming, Running, Basketball plus enrichment. Plus awesome adult activities. New pool, new locker rooms, new gyms - if you want to become active this is a place to checkout! Excited for NEW Rowing Studio!!!
I have been coming to the YMCA for over 40 yrs, I am currently 51 yrs old. I prefer the Kingston Y to a more modern Health club and I have been a member to many. It has just what is required of a very humble man. A simple weight room, quiet and relaxed atmosphere , THE BEST steam room and down to earth neighborhood people who always show gratitude and kindness to me. THANK YOU
It is very difficult to get swim times. I think it is time for the YMCA to add more hours for the pool. It is especially hard to get times on the weekends. Pre pandemic the YMCA pool was open a lot more hours both weekends and weekdays and we also have more swimmers now since we are getting the folks that would normally swim at Bard College or other places that have not reopened. I think you are loosing members with it being difficult to get times. Also I am ok with continuing to have to schedule times, but there are far too many time the pool is fully booked and I show up for my time and the pool is not full, also the reverse is true mostly on Sunday mornings people show up with time booked and cannot get in the pool since every lane is occupied. Most times when this overbooking is happening the is someone using a lane for a private swim lesson. So if you want to continue to have folks schedule times it needs to be policed better, which I know is hard. My flexibility for getting swim times, is not what is was now that I am going into the office a few days each week. I used to be able to fit times in between my meetings for work now it is before or after work.
The front desk staff and life guards are all very helpful and supportive. I have been a member of the YMCA or other comparable facilities for over forty years. As a former fitness director US Pentagon and consultant for US Public Health Service I give the people that work here: Lily, Chris, Kumar, Thomas and Jen to name a few a “5” star rating. They are some the most wonderful and down to earth people I have ever met and are the true gate keepers of this very nice community center…
