Yoga Space is a pilot initiative at Bethesda Project. Our mission is to provide free yoga and meditation classes to men who are transitioning out of homelessness. Classes will be held in a bright, beautiful 'Yoga Space'.
Yoga Space will provide free yoga and meditation to men who are transitioning out of homelessness. Rather than just have a room to teach yoga and meditation, 'Yoga Space' is creating a bright, beautiful studio that will welcome the men, and provide an atmosphere which is most conducive to self-growth, self-reflection, and transformation.
Our mission is to provide free yoga in a bright, beautiful atmosphere to transitional homeless men suffering from addiction, as well as the employees who serve them. Studies show yoga improves muscle tone, flexibility, strength, balance, and stamina. Evidence suggests it is also a way to relax and reconnect with the body, mind, and spirit. “Yoga Space” is renovating and remodeling a 600 sq. foot space in Center City.
Long-term goals include becoming the first non-profit organization solely dedicated to improving the lives of the homeless with the practice of yoga and meditation. Additionally, we will conduct a study to examine whether yoga can be a positive form of therapy for this population. If our hypothesis is correct, the practice of yoga for homeless could become widespread, and eventually considered as part of the healing process for homeless who are working toward a transition back into mainstream society.
