Youth Museum of Southern West Virginia

Description

No matter what time of year you visit Beckley, West Virginia, you will find many scenic, cultural, and recreational opportunities awaiting you. Two of the most unique attractions are the Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine and the Youth Museum of Southern West Virginia. These two popular institutions officially joined April 1, 2002, in an effort to portray the history, culture and character of this uncommon coal-mining region.

As the focal points of the City’s lovely New River Park, the Exhibition Coal Mine and the Youth Museum draw thousands of people to the area annually. The unique underground mine, the recreated coal camp, the Youth Museum and their Mountain Homestead are surrounded by inviting lawns, colorful flowers, picnic areas, an imposing coal miner statue and a whimsical 20 ft. “Peace Totem”.

Located just footsteps away from the Exhibition Coal Mine, the Youth Museum of Southern West Virginia is open to the public year round and available at any time for pre-arranged tour groups.

The Youth Museum’s main gallery is made up of four railroad boxcars. The central exhibit area features an average of three different exhibits yearly. Designed to entertain as well as educate, the exhibits range from “T-Rex”, “Bats”, and “Artist in the Studio” to “Page after Page”, an award winning children’s authors presentation.

Group tours include a visit to the Museum’s Planetarium. Seasonal programs highlight constellations, visible planets and special celestial events.

Behind the Museum’s main building, stands the Mountain Homestead. Developed to enrich history studies, the Museum has recreated a typical settlement on the Appalachian frontier.

Trained interpreters explain the importance of each reconstructed historical building. Visit the weaver’s shed – complete with loom and spinning wheels. In the two-story log house, groups listen as the guide explains the many interesting artifacts and antiques made and used by the rugged individuals that settled this region. Step back in time as you enter the one room school and experience “readin’, writin’, and rithmetic’” as it used to be. The barn, blacksmith shop, and general store all help to complete this rich historical journey of the late 19th century.

In 2000, the Youth Museum was awarded the prestigious Institute of Museum and Library Services, National Museum Service Award. The award was presented in Washington D.C. by President Clinton and Mrs. Clinton and was given in recognition of the Museum’s vital community outreach programs.

One price encompasses all activities at both the Exhibition Mine and the Youth Museum during the summer months. Group rates are available. Reservations are required. May, June and October dates fill quickly; so reserve early to avoid disappointment. The complex is located just 2 ½ miles from the Exit 44 interchange of Interstate 77. Call (304) 252-3730 for reservations.

Both the Exhibition Coal Mine and the Youth Museum have gift shops offering unique coal figurines, homemade fudge, traditional and educational toys, local crafts, and books.

The Youth Museum offers a rewarding and educational experience for people of all ages and interests. Nestled in the beautiful mountains of Southern West Virginia, we encourage everyone to come and visit all the Mine, the Museum, and our community has to offer!

This is an okay kids museum, they have one indoor exhibit, and a small dome planetarium. The staff is dedicated, and the twelve minute stargazing show is very well done. Don't expect to spend more than an hour here. If possible combine your visit with the coal museum, if that is open. Hours are not updated on Google, so calling is good.
Wasn't really a fan I did not see anything in the pictures like Thomas the train or Clifford the dog the lady said they were just exhibits back in like 2020 the houses is in the back were pretty cool though
So glad we stumbled upon this treasure! We could only stay for 20 minutes but our toddler would have rated all day if we let them! Great experience for the price. We live 3 hours away but might have to make the drive again just for here!
Grew up in Beckley and always loved it there. I'm glad now to bring my own kids! I've also had three different film production teams there for various films and shows. They are always great to work with and I love showing our mine off to the out of state teams!!
Readers heaven! Every kind of reading activity to encourage children to read! English and Spanish activities. Worth admission which was $5 at the time
Pretty much an oversized room with different little play areas. If you're just looking to get out of the house, play with some new toys or change of pace it's great! I wouldn't be surprised if most kids got bored with it after a few trips but it sounds like they switch it up seasonally so probably depends on the kid. We were visiting the area and went twice. My 7year old was bored the second time, the toddlers still were interested.
Absolutely amazing! The children's museum is more geared toward 0-5 year olds sorry if I underestimate that!, but since it was included in the price, it was still fun to walk through. This was totally worth the visit and since there was a AAA discount, it became more affordable. My children often have a hard time focusing, but they were very interested in the underground tour of the old coal mine! They have a campground with pool and water slides. We will try to make that work in the future!
The youth museum was an amazing experience for our 3yo. She had so much fun learning the letters and numbers on the interactive exhibit. The underground tour of the mine captivating and extremely informative. The tour guide Kenny was very nice and knowledgeable about coal history. 10/10 will do again, and I highly recommend for you too as well.
8-2-2021 - I'm giving this rating a one at this point just due to the fact that me and my boy made plans to be here for over a week and then come to find out there not open. According to their web page it states Monday through Friday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. closed on Sundays. So the whole day was ruined. Traveling a distance to be here and they're closed, very poor not updating or keeping their site updated. The lady said they haven't had those hours since before covid-19 which is going on 2 years now.
Nice people here, very interested in making the experience fun for kids - the workers went above and beyond to inform us of upcoming events for kids, and to make sure my child felt welcome. Take your kid here for a fun, educational experience.
