Zipang is a legendary name of ancient Japan. Japan was first introduced to Europe by Marco Polo as a “country of gold” in the 14th century. He used what was considered a legendary name, “Chipangu” or “Zipangu” to reference the country. The word was derived from the pronunciation of “Nippon Koku” literally translating to “country of Japan” in Middle-Age Chinese. His story later inspired Christopher Columbus and many other explorers to discover the new world. We modified “Zipangu” into “Zipang” to better fit an English spelling.
