www.zorongo.org "...dance that stirs the blood and lets the spirit soar!"
Founded in 1982 by Artistic Director Susana di Palma, Zorongo Flamenco's mission is "to enrich our community by drawing people close to the beauty and energy of the Flamenco tradition and, by expanding on that tradition, create an innovative art form that explores the issues of contemporary life." Di Palma has directed and choreographed dozens of original flamenco ballets with strong narrative themes on various social questions. She has also maintained a commitment to excellence in traditional flamenco performance and instruction. Having spent a lifetime studying all aspects of the art of flamenco in Spain with maestros such as Enrique “El Cojo”, Carmen Mora, Manolete, Manolo Marin, Merche Esmeralda and “new generation” dancer, Rafaela Carrasco, and dancing in “tablaos” in Madrid, festivals throughout Spain, and in dance companies such as La Singla, Rafael de Cordoba and Maria Benitez ’ Estampa Flamenca, her performance and choreographic skills have, at their core, the essence of flamenco tradition.
Zorongo Flamenco's Dance School offers instruction to all levels and ages of flamenco students. Classes are taught at the Zorongo Studio, 3012 Minnehaha Ave S. Susana di Palma also instructs students at the University of Minnesota, area schools and colleges, and through The Cowles Center for Dance and the Peforming Arts' distance learning program. Classes include live accompaniment by accomplished flamenco guitarists.
The mission of Zorongo Flamenco Dance Theatre and School is to enrich our community by drawing people close to the beauty and energy of the flamenco tradition and, by expanding on that tradition, create an innovative art form that explores the issues of contemporary life.
