Sadly, we didn't enjoy our meal at all. We had three courses, one poorer than the next. The tomato soup was thin and tasteless. Then we had a cauliflower appetizer, which was bland at best, and our entrees were pretty abysmal. One was a pasta dish and the other a vegetable dish. Both lacked any interesting flavors or textures. Maybe the chef had a bad night, but I wouldn't go back. The server did the best she could, but the overall experience was very poor. The meal wasn't cheap. Save yourself the disappointment.
This is a cute restaurant in an old house. Very charming. I had to give it 5 stars because everything we ate was pretty delicious. The salads were nothing special but I had a main course of scallops and salmon and my husband had the duck which were both very good. We finished dinner lemon cheesecake that was pretty out of this world. Overall, I think it's worth a trip!
My husband and I came up for a short weekend getaway. The reviews for this restaurant were really great and that's why we chose to come here for dinner. Unfortunately, we were terribly disappointed in the food and couldn't believe we paid what we paid for such bland and tasteless food. Lime pesto red snapper sounded delicious but the phyllo wrapped around it was overwhelming, in addition it was burnt. My husband had the lamb stew; which was actually tasty but the lamb was really overcooked.
The restaurant is down a wandering pathway. The decor is spacious, with artwork hanging on the wood walls. The menu does not really label dishes as appetizers or entrees, but progresses from light to heavier. The special white bean, cremini mushroom and leek soup lacked seasoning, a fact compounded by the lack of salt and pepper on the table. The waiter misinterpreted lamb kebabs and lamb stew as "2 lambs", so we had to wait while the second entree was prepared. As such, both dishes were tasty. The dessert selection was a bit pedestrian and somewhat cloying. There were no supervisory observations by management or the wait staff. Our waiter was obviously quite new and distracted, and as such, we should have been looked in on by someone.
I thought it would be a nice place to eat since everyone was giving it rave reviews. Mind you, there's not a thousand places to eat like the bay area. First the place was a bit hard to find, when we finally got here by foot from the main street, we were a bit confused. You walk through this un-kept garden with no signage says this way. There was also signage for another business. We get to the restaurant, it's not busy but there's 3 people standing by the front door. They squeeze us in a table for 2 upstairs, the third person got a chair up against the wall. This place was made for couple dinning, that's for sure. I got an order of calamari, the description was not what I thought I was going to get. I thought I was ordering calamari steak. It was small calamari cut up which is fine but there was tons of onions on the raw side and lots of bell peppers. My daughter got a ravioli, it was one extremely large ravioli. My other daughter got fish wrapped in filo, this was the best of the three dishes. One thing we all liked was the bread sticks here. I was a little sad that our table had no view of the water. I think there was mention of a view in one of the reviews.
The ambiance of the restaurant was wonderful. Overall we had a great experience. I rated this place 3 stars, with deductions for two major reasons: 1 Slow pace - it took us 2.5 hours to finish a three course meal, often wig about 30 minutes between dish. The service was good, but the kitchen was moving pretty slow. 2 Entrée slightly over cooked - it was still delicious and well seasoned, but the seared ahi tuna was a little more than seared. Overall I would recommend that people check this place out, but expect a slow evening.
The nice people from the visitor center recommended us this place for dinner. I can say it was a pleasant surprise! Not super expensive, great food and service! The chicken thighs I ordered were delicious, they almost melted in my mouth. It also has a very cozy atmosphere. For a one-day visit in Mendocino, it was definitely worth it!
Had a fantastic birthday dinner here on January 2nd! It all started off with wandering down the little wooden trail to the entrance into a spacious room with the utmost ambiance! The vegetarian soup awoke the tastebuds with a marvelous mixture of butternut squash, sweet potatoes, & leeks. The caesar salad was THE best that we have ever had! Dinner was a NY steak for my better half and prawns for myself - also excellent. Dessert was all that I was expecting, since I rate all restaurants on their capability of being able to finish off a meal with pizazz. I had a rhubarb parfait with Swedish cream - it was to die for and the other desert was a light flavorful and excellent cheesecake I so wish that I had taken the flourless chocolate cake and tiramisu to go - so I could have tasted all of them! They also had homemade ice cream to go along with any of the desserts! To top it off, they took a birthday photo and handed us a 4x6 print on our way out. Thanks so much for making our happy memories stick!
We love 955 Ukiah! Fantastic seafood and roast duck that is amazing. Plus gracious service from the owners Peggy and Jamey and from our waitperson, Maribeth. We have been coming here Friday of Thanksgiving for more than 25 years, and always delighted.
During our week-long vacation on the coast, this was hands down the worst place we had a meal at... here's why: Our first impression upon seeing the dining room was that everything was very dated... the posters on the wall were faded, as were the dark green tablecloths. The chairs were regular wooden ones, more fitting for a deli, and looked like they'd been used thus. Oh boy. We were greeted by two females who were rather stingy with their smiles - that was a sign of things to come. We were seated at one of the booths in the middle of the room, and were handed menus. There were some seemingly-good choices, so we selected a salad to share, and furthermore salmon and duck entrees. After taking our order, the waitress simply up and left, leaving our menus on the table, barely hanging on to the edge, right where she was standing... huh?! 10 minutes later she realized her mistake, came by, and took them away, without a chuckle or apology. So we waited another 5 minutes, and the salad came. No salad plates - we were forced to use our little bread plates with butter on them to eat our salads... by this time I really wanted to leave, but didn't want to make a scene. Post-salad, the entrees came. They did NOT look appetizing at all, quite ugly, in fact. The salmon came on a beat-up white plate, and was a pale looking pink that made me wonder about its freshness. One bite into it and it was obvious that this wasn't fresh fish, as it tasted gummy, under-seasoned, and just awful. There wasn't much else on the plate, except some garnish that looked really tired. My wife's roast duck came looking burned and the skin was burned, and it was overcooked and dry; my 5-year old son commented that it tasted like turkey, and the dry kind at that! Both entrees cost $30+ dollars... and I made up my mind then that I'd write a review of the experience here so no one else gets stiffed at this god-awful place. When the waitress next came around, I asked her how long the restaurant's been in business; she said 25 years. No wonder, I thought, all the spark and imagination had gone out the kitchen window a long time ago. I'm not sure if Chef Irving of Restaurant: Impossible could have done anything for this place! An older female settled our bill; I presume that she was the owner... she also seemed really tired, and service had just started at 6:30 pm, and this was on a Thursday, when the restaurant reopened after its weekly rest. We glanced over at Cafe Beaujolais next door upon leaving, and wondered why we didn't just go with the sure bet - we'd been to it before, and greatly enjoyed our experience there.
